Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

World Health Organization Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has said there must be a system "of some kind of checks" being done in schools when they reopen to make sure Covid-19 does not spread.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, she said that is what local governments have to consider as schools reopen.

She said it would be important to monitor and keep track in the school setting "to pick up anything before it becomes unmanageable".

She said the risks of Covid-19 are "extremely low" among children and that there are not many cases of children transmitting to others in a school setting.

"Children don't seem to be getting severely ill but we do know they are capable of getting it. What we have noticed is where countries did not close schools, we have not seen big outbreaks".

France have just had to close 7 schools, surely this hokey cokey method is more harmful to kids than just having an online tutoring programme.

French schools shut after child tests positive
Seven schools have closed as a precaution in the north-eastern French city of Roubaix after a child tested positive for coronavirus.
Officials say they will tell the families of those who came in contact with the child. Meanwhile, the shuttered schools will conduct lessons remotely.
French schools began to reopen last week as the country slowly eased its lockdown. But many were concerned about the move, with one poll showing 69% of respondents thought authorities could not keep them safe. A number of other schools have since closed because of positive cases.
Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told French broadcaster RTL on Monday that 70 cases of the virus had been found in the roughly 40,000 schools that have opened since last week. He said all affected schools had been shut, showing how strict the authorities were being on safety.
But he also said that not teaching children could have serious consequences. "Our children must not be collateral victims of health measures," he reportedly said.

I fully expect that the education department are now drawing up plans, to finance class sizes of no more than 12, for the next 5 years, with a qualified teacher and teaching assistants, to help those 'working class and deprived kids' that are losing out on their education at the moment and there is so much concern about.

There are ways they (and the rest of the workforce) can do a lot of that now - go to a four day week, so you have a different fifth of the class off (or taking part in the lesson remotely) on every day.

Give the parents the same day off in the week and you help with public transport and lowering exposure at work too.

The impact of schools opening WILL lead to huge number of deaths from kids to adults.

This government can't protect NHS staff who wear PPE (tho out of date) they couldn't give a F about teachers or schools.

I won't be put my kid (nursery age) in even tho I want him to go to help his development but why would I risk it.

Average school classroom in the UK is 27 pupils with schools averaging 281 (primary) 978 (secondary) if you have to stay 2m apart from everyone, you best hope your kids school has 20 assembly halls because it's impossible for kids to social distance at schools and no one will be tested.

Government using kids as a dry run for finishing lockdown is a new low

Are you stating this as fact or in your opinion ?

If you’re stating as fact something to back it up would be good.

It shows an abysmal failure of the health and social care system which was overwhelmed. So much so that hospitals moved the elderly out of hospitals and not allowing them in if ill, 'to free up space', so as to 'not have scenes like in Italy and Spain', only hid the suffering, pain and deaths of the elderly behind care homes' closed doors.. It will be incumbent on CQC to launch investigations.
How much have the Tories cut from health and social care the last 10 years, how many times in those years they were told they were harming the NHS by doing so, putting more burden on hospitals.

They've reaped what they sowed, and the public get the government they deserve by voting Johnson in again like utter idiots, it's been said many many times, Turkeys voting for Xmas.

Returning people with Covid back to care homes is why we are seeing nearly half the deaths to this virus now come from those homes for the most vulnerable in our society, it's a shocking scandal that this government needs to be held to account for.

It's truly disgusting what they've done, the worst government in the world at handling this pandemic, that's what we have in charge here.

It just showed how weak as an opposition the Labour party was under Corbyn.

The school near us has gone to a partial return.
The kids are as normal in the classroom - yet have to social distance in the playground ????????

Relatives want the government to be held to account. Johnson, Hancock, Raab, Gove et al will find it increasingly hard to hide behind anyone and anything.

"The daughter of a man who died with suspected coronavirus has told Sky News she wants to know who signed off on a government policy to allow untested COVID-19 patients to be sent to care homes, potentially spreading the virus.

Dr Cathy Gardner says she fears the policy could have been a factor in the death of her 88-year-old father Michael Gibson, who passed away in a care home in Oxfordshire on 3 April.

She has described the government's discharge policies as "irresponsible".

Italy, France and Spain are the best countries for us to watch and assess.

We need to get back to normal as soon as possible and learning from others the best way to do that.

I can only assume you've spent significant time in these countries over the last 10 weeks to know all this info?
We are nowhere near those countries in terms of recovery. Just look at weeks 17 and 18 here.

Was planning to yes, but I don't get your point.

I said we learn from Italy, hopefully all goes well for them, and in a few weeks we can follow suit.

That would tally with your point that we are a few weeks behind Italy.

If everything goes well for the similarly effected European countries then there is no logical argument against relaxing things here.

We need things to be back to as close to normal ASAP. We will not be able to reduce risks to nil any time soon so we need to mitigate the risk as best we can.

Hopefully one day there will be a reckoning for those who constructed that policy....preferably involving a noose.

They are murderers. No ifs or buts. They've conspired to murder people.

I didn't say we are a few weeks behind. I said we are miles behind.

Stevie Wonder could read that table and draw more rational conclusions than you.

EU calls for independent probe into the WHO’s pandemic response

The European Union and other countries have called for an independent assessment of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) response to the coronavirus pandemic “to review experience gained and lessons learned”.

The resolution has the support of more than half of the WHO’s member countries and will be discussed this week at the decision-making body of the UN health agency, being held virtually this year.

The move comes amid Australia’s call for an independent inquiry into the origins of the pandemic and the WHO’s response to it — and after Donald Trump’s repeated accusations that the WHO helped China cover up the extent of the initial Covid-19 outbreak.

Mr Trump has also called for an immediate halt to all US funding to the UN health agency.

The EU resolution proposes that the independent evaluation should be initiated “at the earliest appropriate moment” and should, among other issues, examine “the actions of the WHO and their timelines pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic”.

The WHO announced the coronavirus outbreak to be a global health emergency on January 30, its highest level of alert. In the following weeks, the WHO warned countries there was a narrowing “window of opportunity” to prevent the virus from spreading globally.

WHO officials, however, repeatedly described the transmission of the virus as “limited” and said it was not as transmissible as flu; experts have since said Covid-19 spreads even faster.

It declared the outbreak to be a pandemic on March 11, after the virus had killed thousands globally and sparked large epidemics in South Korea, Italy, Iran and elsewhere.
