TLDR: Do not panic, the world is monitoring the situation closely. Be critical of media reports that are often designed to illicit an emotional/political response. There are capable people on top of this including epidemiologists, clinicians, etiological researchers (me), the list goes on. The virus is an emergency in China and now deemed a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC): https://www.who.int/news-room/detai...the-outbreak-of-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)

It's basically a boost to funding/various resources needed to contain the threat. WHO will ensure proper public health policies. There is more pressure on member nations to coordinate. This is not a pandemic, it is further recognition that the situation warrants more measures going forward

What do you need to know?

As of 23:59 Jan 29, there are officially:

7711 confirmed cases in China across 31 provinces

5794 suspected cases in 30 provinces. 81947/88693 are under medical observation

170 deaths and 1370 are severe cases. 162/170 deaths occurred in Hubei province (where Wuhan is). The rest are within various provinces in China

  • 17 deaths range from 48-89 years old. 14/17 deaths are of the elderly above 65 years old. Most have pre-existing conditions that seem to predispose to a more severe disease presentation. People who are already sick prior to infection may be more at risk due to decreased immunity. Some of these people had hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Death was typically the result of severe respiratory failure but includes others like multi-organ failure. Info on some of the remaining deaths is currently unknown
  • Healthy people have died
  • 124 people recovered

This is a very good thread if anybody is worried.

I dono. Doesn’t China tend to not give a bollox about safety and stuff. Why would they shut down cities if there wasn’t anything in it?

There are a few so called reports coming out of China saying the government is trying to keep a lid on the actual scale/severity of the situation.

There are videos of people just dropping and dying in the middle of the street/mall/hospital and a video of one person convulsing really badly on a guerney.

I personally think its a bit more serious than a flu like outbreak that only really hits the elderley, sick etc. Do you shut down a city of 11 million, followed by neighbouring cities for something that isnt too serious.

Hmmmmmm, right at the epicentre

The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in 1956. It is the only institute specializing in virology, viral pathology and virus technology among 19 other biological and biomedical research institutes in CAS

Of course it is as is singing, dog walking and minor construction projects in the garden these are just some of the intricacies of a full and enjoyable life.

If you're a good boy I might share my SAS story or the quick thinking tale that ultimately saved a man's life and if you send me money the truth about the runaway trailer careering down the slipway with a 17ft day boat on board at Falmouth slipway might get an airing. But don't get me started on the dream that saved the jobs of 110 people at a factory I worked at - there is only so much worship a man can take

*puts the telly on like an adventuring boss
