Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Good argument.

We needed an idea of how we get out - now we have that. Doesn't mean it's going to happen - because if the infection rate doesn't drop then we'll have to push things back won't we?

I don't see how the advice has actually changed that much. The new slogan or whatever - yeh, seems dead pointless to me.

But people need to get back to work if it is safe to do so and for certain sectors that may now be the time. Construction workers were back in Spain what, 3-4 weeks ago, for example? And many have already been back based on the amount of construction I've seen going on just riding my bike around the local area in the last few weeks - literally every road in and out of the little suburb I'm in has been resurfaced in the last week alone.

I won't back everything this gov does because I think it's been a shambles overall (like 90% of countries) but I'm not interested in picking apart everything for the sake of it either.

Keir Starmer and the other Labour MPs were right in saying that there are a lot of questions that need answering and hopefully they will press them for an answer tomorrow.
You watched the address and you missed the point entirely. It wasn;'t so much what was said (as contradictory as it was); it was a dog whistle. The country now have the message. Break cover and put yourself in harms way...oh, and you can exercise and sunbathe too...if you survive.

It was a master class in semiotics, delivered by a 'kin idiot.

You’re supporting MURDER.

Bad guy

I take your point on some firms taking the piss a bit, but that's a really poor example, because it's likely to be exactly what the furloughing scheme is there for.

Estate agents aren't selling houses so they have no income, and that's not likely to change for a few months. Under normal circumstances, there's a good chance your cousin would have been laid off and they'd have only considered filling that post again when they were confident their cashflow could support it. As it stands, the govt are taking the risk on the business not recovering.

I get that point. She works in student housing - basically they're an estate agent/agency which deals with people's problems with their houses.

Her job is normally to organise emergency call outs etc. I guess she was furloughed because now the people who actually go and sell the houses are having to do that job as they can't get out and about. But surely a company like that shouldn't be looking to lay people off immediately either.

Anyway, take on board what you say.

Have three mates who have been furloughed. One on the sports desk at the Express (is that right?), another who works in manufacturing prosthetic limbs (maybe he'll be back this week, I don't know) and then another who works in a gym so clearly he can't go back any time soon.

The government were telling people who couldn't work at home, to go to work 7 weeks ago. I dont understand why people are shocked at this.

I think we definitely need a plan on how to start making things more normal again because this cant go on forever. But we didnt get anywhere near enough detail tonight. He was deliberately vague and I dont like that. I hope theres actual detail tomorrow.

I agree there mate. I do think it was vague and I think there are massive questions which need to be asked and hopefully will be.

Just seeing a lot of fuss about the 'back to work' bit when really it doesn't seem like the advice in that regard has changed much?

We could exercise anyway. Given we've had lovely weather for spring and it may even continue, it might be nice for those people who live in big urban areas / high-rise flats etc to be able to know they can sit in a park for an hour or so and - as long as they use common sense - do so without knowing they are breaking a rule.

This is what everything should all be about isn't it? Common sense? We have to get out of it somehow so it has to be about just being sensible.

Before you start, I don't think people doing congas to celebrate VE day is sensible - but then again that's not what the government said to do, is it.

Go for it.

36 posts per day suggests you won’t as you live for being a troll on here.

Never trust a man who uses the word semiotics* on a footie forum, for they are plainly not what they seem to be
