If you listen to the More or Less podcast, Prof David Spieglhalter discusses the risk of death from Coronavirus. He said that if left unchecked then U.K. could be looking at 10,000 deaths per day during the peak and excess deaths somewhere in the order of 300,000.

He is an expert on risk analysis and is usually very reassuring/relaxed about risk around health issues, pointing out the difference between relative and absolute risk. Media tends to report the relative risk (eating bacon makes you 3 times more likely to get cancer) without putting it in context. Anyway, I digress - point is, yes nobody can prove what the death toll would have been without lockdown but a lot of scientists all over the world were very worried.

Chinese in Britain 'too scared to venture out alone' amid rising levels of anti-Asian racism
Rising levels of racist abuse that forced people of Chinese heritage to withdraw from UK society before the lockdown are likely to escalate when it lifts, an academic has warned.
Chinese people have been coughed at, attacked and told to “go back home”, according to research led by Prof Binna Kandola. Reported experiences ranged from casual jokes to violent attacks and death threats, with people left too frightened to venture out alone and children ridiculed by their peers, 29 in-depth interviews with people of east Asian heritage revealed.
Kandola told the PA news agency that some people who have lived in the UK their whole life are questioning “whether people of Chinese heritage will ever be accepted as British”.
Just over half of the 412 people surveyed said they had experienced an increase in discrimination during the Covid-19 outbreak. Three in 10 said they had witnessed or experienced discrimination at work, while 37% said they had experienced this outside the office.
One woman, an NHS doctor who works in her local hospital’s respiratory unit, said she has stopped her daily morning jog because of the abuse. Another family withdrew their four-year-old boy from a football club after other parents told their children not to stand close to him.

People won't like hearing this and won't accept it, but nevertheless this is generally an expected reaction (idiots exist and they'll take the basest form of rationalising what has happened in their simple minds) and the ultimate blame for it happening should rest on the Chinese government.

We shouldn't be letting relatively minor issues like this be used as a weapon for the Chinese government to shield themselves from blame for this. "Oh, you mustn't keep blaming China because idiots will attack Chinese people" - no. Just a big fat no to that crap.

I did think that - Ferguson was the man who made the government see their own arse over this and prevented hundreds of thousands of people dying from this needlessly due to Tory ideology.

For Hancock to say Ferguson should be subject to police investigation is the pot calling the kettle black, given our good ol' Health Secretary was perfectly happy to go along with mass corporate manslaughter in the beginning.
