Tell 'em where you're from, mezz...

And the award for most Atlanta thing ever goes to...

There's a disgusting ageist reaction to this virus and its impact amongst many people.

Those in their 20s and 30s are seem to be taking a 'devil take the hindmost' attitude. They all have family members who are much older and possibly family members in their own or extended families who are in a vulnerable positoin due to ongoing illnesses. However, some of them they cant help but highlight to their delight (and others annoyance) their reducded chance of catching the virus. That's what decades of neo-liberal indoctrination does: creates a population full of selfish nobheads who look out only for themselves.

Utter scum.

It's unbelievable. This is what I am getting from my friends. People telling me that the 2-3% calculation is 'skewed' because it includes the elderly and vulnerable. WTF! As if they shouldn't even be included when calculating the risk posed to society.

I have to say, it's quite surprising who I'm getting this from. Left wing lunatics that are normally up in arms because a bearded transsexual has experienced a microaggresion are telling me to calm down because it only affects the elderly and vulnerable.

I said this the other day that what they generally mean is that the media reaction has been akin to this being a zombie apocalypse - e.g. a threat to mankind altogether; an extinction event.

You'll get the odd one who are saying "screw the old" or whatever, but most just mean the above.

Also, the calculation will be skewed because it only takes into account those who are diagnosed - in reality, the death rate will be around 1% when you consider people with mild symptoms/kids etc.

Not to mention, to pick one at random, since the first case of coronavirus has hit these shores, some 8,500 people will have died from smoking related illnesses, and no one really gives two hoots, much less advocates banning tobacco.

Whether the percentage applies to the entire population or just those diagnosed, 2 - 3% is an awful percentage to be dealing with, and I've seen estimates that more than 60% of the population could be diagnosed.

Maybe, but they’re still missing the actual point.

Given there’s no current vaccine, this virus can spread unhindered if we allow it to. The hospitalisation rate in Italy as been circa 10%, with ITU requirement being around 5%. So they’ve gone into lockdown to avoid the virus spreading exponentially.

We’ve been told to wash our hands....

If this infection ends up with only a 5% infection rate over here that’d mean 300,000 need hospital beds and 150,000 needing ITU. Given we’ve only got circa 165,000 total hospital beds, spot the issue.

That’s why slowing the spread and evening out the numbers affected is so important. But as usual the U.K. has seemingly decided it’s ‘special’ and so we’re carrying on as if it’s no biggy.
