I really don't want to wind up the spokesman for the UK government, but on this at least I think they're probably doing the right thing so I'll try and put the other side.
They feed the data from Italy and elsewhere into the models, or at least that's what I'd expect. They know a lot more now about just how communicable the virus is for instance. Take a look at this article that outlines some of the complex issues involved in implementation of social distancing:
The problem with the immediate aggressive approach is that it's not sustainable and too many people will disregard it due to their own experience. Look at some of the responses on this thread. You and I know that in two weeks we won't be seeing those responses, or at least far fewer of them, but they're the reality at present.
I think the govts approach is to try containment for as long as possible, then move on to delay and again try to do the most effective things, not necessarily all the the weapons in the arsenal at once.
I'll leave it there. I respect your point of view, I just think this is one of those occasions where the intuitive response: 'shut everything down' may not be the most effective. Yes, even after the evidence of the Italian doctor...
Whats to say its not going to re-emerge in China if unsuspecting Brits or Americans etc take it back in the next 3-4 weeks.
There is no point quarantining one or two areas when its already out because the probsbility is unless other countries do it, its just going to spread and come full circle.
America will be our biggest threat as they wont acknowledge, have no system in place to deal with it and millions of people cant afford to get tested/treated or even stay off work.
“With no mandatory 14 day quarantine“ is a completely different statement that your original “Paying the price for allowing half a million Chinese settling into northern Italy, with tens of thousands returning from China in late February.”Don’t think a small number of Italian returning from China will be as devastated as tens of thousands of returning Chinese factory workers.
Majority of the Chinese traveled to China for new year celebration in mid February and returned to Italy in late February. If you look at the average incubation period, the timeline of the current outbreak matches the date of their return. With no mandatory 14 days quarantine, it’s no surprise italy is paying the price now. Most of the Italian base Chinese came from Wenzhou, one of the worst hit area in China. Many were trying to get out of due to health system getting overwhelm and Italy is a logical place to go. Most of them are migrant factory workers for famous fashion brand.
While China banned travelling within its own border, the rest of the western country sit back with ignorant attitude and with little or no border control.
It’s no surprise to see country with stringent quarantine measures and partial border restriction are keeping the virus under control. Just look at Taiwan compare to japan and Korea.
Nothing about targeting anyone. It is just the way it is. While the rest of the world are suffering, China media are having a good time mocking Europe and US for the way they are handling the crisis and would be happy to see travel restriction implement on people from these region.
Must have got the Ipad off WishLooks like he’s over riding his spell checker again lol
Tell I'm to use both sides of the bog roll...I’ve just noticed the lads toilets at work has ran out of toilet roll but I’ve not told anyone. Keeping an eye on sheepish faces coming out. I’ll keep you all updated as and when things start to happen.
Good thinking Joey. In fact, you’d be a useful asset in the coming Apocalypse with your horticultural knowledge. Better than that London liberal elite @Bruce Wayne anyways. What’s use would he be, googling ‘how to open a tin of spaghetti hoops without a tin opener’ We can use him as fuel for the fire I guessTell I'm to use both sides of the bog roll...

My old Boss used to say hope you use both sides with the council cutting our budget back....![]()
Yeah, okay buddy it's not as if I hold you responsible though it might feel like that! I do understand the point about timing, but I personally think we have already gone past that time. There do not seem to be any measures in place to delay this virus let alone contain it. People coming in from airports say that they are not making the public aware of the dangers, because wherever you come from nobody seems to care, or pay any attention. As you can see from this thread, this attitude bleeds down into the population at large.
When I flew back from England to China, as soon as I arrived, I realized it was deadly serious. It was a shock and frightening but that woke me up! We couldn't get off the plane for hours (they let individual planes out into the airport 1 by 1). Had to fill in forms detailing travel, and medical history, every official in the airport was dressed like a spaceman, or at the very least they were wearing masks and gloves. All passengers were also wearing masks (except me and my kid). Yes this made things scary, but the fear served a purpose.
Because not only do such measures raise awareness of the illness and its seriousness, but even the most nonchalant person cannot help being infected by it, and knuckles under and follows the rules.
Even if they can't implement such measures (although I really think it just needs leadership in government and on the ground) they could surely make more people, realize the seriousness of this, and raise awareness.
When I watch football stadiums full to capacity and the government using language like contain or delay, I really just think it's a bad joke. Seems they have taken 'contain' to mean, get everyone together in one big massive container!
I assume that's in a badly infected area. My sister in law is stuck in Harbin while visiting family, after an initial 2 weeks lockdown, people are now moving about more freely as long as they where a mask.I'm currently speaking to someone in China who has been on lockdown for two months already and has another month to go.
Why anyone would want to suffer that is beyond me, especially as I'm already on the verge of telling you all to bugger off after just 3 days.
I wouldn't last long. You need @MarcelsGoat
