Corners - Zonal marking

Said it previous but Newcastle started all their runs from the back post while our players are all facing the ball the other direction.

No one has any idea who's behind them and they end up getting outjumped because they're static in their 'zone'.

Don't recall us doing this last season, or are we just getting exposed for it now by spurs and newcastle?

Maybe don't f around with it at the back so much, maybe don't lose the ball so much and we panic, chasing back towards our goal and concede a corner. Maybe close down more more and don't allow opposition shots off that forces Pickford to make a great save..... then maybe we don't concede so many corners.

It’s completely obvious now and yes I think Newcastle seen Spurs game and jumped on the weakness.

Exactly the same routine has cost us 3 goals.

…..we miss DCL near post dominance and Pickford hasn’t got the physical presence to dominate.

It’s a big concern despite Moyes being a stickler for repetitive defensive corner work in training.

I'm a huge advocate of Pickford, yet we all know his primary weakness is crosses into the box. Far too often, he's static and won't try to claim a ball.

When he attempted yesterday for the fourth, it was obvious it's not something he is comfortable with because he was all over the place in terms of position.

Couple that with how we're picking up players (or not) and it's a perfect storm.

We are well behind the curve when it comes to attacking and defending set pieces. Other teams have clear plans and orchestrated moves. Newcastle and Spurs have done the exact same thing. Queued players up at the back post and caused chaos. That's cost us 3 goals. Newcastle's 4th came from us not properly clearing a corner.
In contrast, our corners are just lumping balls into the box and hoping one of the centre backs gets a head on it. Moyes gave Charlie Adam a go as the coach for this because his son was his agent. It had no impact on our set pieces and we haven't got anyone to take his place.
