Contracts for players 30 or over

It depends on each situation really.

This. He doesn't look like he's slowing down at all, and the age players can play until is getting longer for those that aren't injury prone and fit.

So, 4 years, no problem here.

This. Finally someone talking sense...

Sir Alex brought in a 36yr old player last season... Does that mean we should all be looking for 36yr olds? NO it does not. Completely depends on situation. Distin has more than justified his contract length.

I'd also say the likes of Neville and Cahill's contract/wage's are in line with loyal valuable squad players. We want players to stay loyal and not be turned by the lure of bigger money elsewhere... What message would it send if as soon as players got older they were shipped out, offered lower contracts?

But if they weren't justifying their large salaries they should be shipped out for better players. When they're worth the money pay it, when they're trading on glory years I don't see that as acceptable.

Using the Man Utd example, he doesn't give long term contracts to anyone over 30. Also, Scholes and Giggs are slightly better than Phil Neville, and even they only get year by year contracts, not 4 year bumper salaries.

That's not to say some players don't deserve it if they are performing, it is case by case, Distin has been a beast. I think it's the length of said contracts, I'd be happier seeing year by year, or 2 year contracts maximum.

Moyes had always said that he wanted to make Everton with a younger team of players; young and homegrown.

Well, that philosophy is out the window and we're now into the make do and mend, arse end of his career at Everton. The feller has no coherent plan other than to go with the flow of selling players to appease banks and surrounding himself with loyal followers. It's like a retread of Smith's 'last days in the bunker' period of a decade ago. It's old and stale, and its visionless and desperate.

I see the point your making and obviously someone like McFadden who clearly didn't offer much WAS shipped out. I'm not saying out of loyalty all players should be kept if they offer nothing to the squad. Neville and Cahill as examples DID offer to the squad (whatever ur opinions of them)

It is a tricky one... Pienaar was 28/29 when we lost him approaching his last contract. Players will no doubt want a 4/5 year contract as it's gonna be there last in most cases. Cahill was given his at 29...

I think uv got to look at every case individually but even wenger has relaxed his stance on 1 yr deals of over 30's. Plus if we started trying to do short deals in that way we'd loose players an transfer cash. Don't forget arteta's price would have had alot to do with his long contract that was left

I don't know if a 3 year with an option or a 4 year deal, however I've said before if it's a 4 year deal I'd guess maybe it's for financial reasons as much as anything namely we struggled to match his wages at spurs so instead of doing that we knocked a few quid off but gave him the extra year meaning its essentially the same total package ?

Pienaar aside the awarding of lengthy contract to older players has been a problem for us or years tracing back to the Kevin Campbell debacle , putting older players on big deals can cost the club a fortune and means you end up giving them away if they leave as nobody is prepared pay big wages + big fee.

What a load of ****e!!

Haha... Your so controversial davek..

Think of it this way, how much worse off would we be if we didn't have Pienaar in our team for the forthcoming season? the alternative would have been to take a gamble on someone else (within our money range of course) and hope that he's as immediatly influential as pienaar has been, chances of that coming off? - so out of the 3 options which would you choose:

a) 4 and a half year deal to the 30 year old pienaar
b) 4/5 year deal to a younger player who may or may not work out
c) Play Vic instead

Is this even up for debate?????????????

Yep very true, it's a tricky situation, especially guessing if a player will continue to have the goods in the future and the fact we need every penny we can get from a transfer fee.

Yes. We want loyalty so they'll stay...until we try and flog them when the time comes...again.

Why is everyone so hung up on fecking age??? if your good enough, fit enough, you'll do. Pienaar can have a contract for as long as he is able to do the job or someone better comes along. End of

Can we not just be happy he is back !?!

I dont think any other fans are like us.

We moan we aint signed anyone, then when we do, we moan its not quite right, in some way.

Looking through the threads I think bar a few exceptions most people are delighted he's back, I certainly am and in my post I wasn't being negative I jut tried to say why I thought it might be a 4 year deal. I think the issue with Everton is many supporters carry or try to carry out a micro analysis of deals because many fans are so much more aware of our own financial situation than the supporters of other clubs.
