If or when Fergie has decided to retire he was never going to go public until the last possible moment after what happened when he announced his retirement in 2002.

ALL the papers are full of this so there must be some truth in it.

Whether or not there is any truth in the Moyes part of the story is another matter. But the Utd board would have known about it for a while and therefore would have identified his successor already...

no. you want info from an ITK. Sheeds and Foxy.

The info is what it is.. take it or leave it. No sleep lost here.

For those of a Bluekipper former persuasion, D410 is John Cribb.

Most clueless poster out there.

I've thought for a long time that Moyes will be high on the list to replace Fergie. Looking at some of the reasoning for and against it you could argue either way:

I think Sir Alex wants another CL trophy before he goes. He's put together a dream strike force in Van Persie and Rooney, it's the start of a new era with players like De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Cleverley and Welbeck and Barcelona's dominance is dwindling.

On the flip side he's due to have a hip operation in the summer and he might want to bow out with his stalwarts Scholes and Giggs. Maybe it's better to hand over at the start of a new dynasty than part way through one? And he would be leaving at the top. If City and Chelsea spend big and overtake United he might not get that opportunity again too soon.

I'm sure that Fergie will just move upstairs, so they're likely to want someone recommended by him and who wouldn't be deterred by having him in the background. Perhaps this is where the idea has come from that Moyes would be working as Ferguson's number two initially? They're very similar and I could see that dynamic working fairly well. Whereas I don't think it would suit Mourinho at all.

The timing perhaps wouldn't be quite right for Davey though. He'd possibly feel that he was leaving us in the lurch because we wouldn't be compensated for his loss and he'd probably feel disappointed that he never won any silverware at the club. He could quite rightly say that he's left us in much better shape than he found us, that he's honoured his contract and that United is too big an opportunity to turn down. He might feel that if he can just bring in the right striker his project at Everton will be complete.

Would he be the right man for United? It's difficult to say. He has very little European experience and the tactical thrashing that Martinez's Wigan gave us could be something that he should expect more often. And he's not been great for us when he's had large amounts of money to spend. He has said that he wants to play like Arsenal but hasn't been able to do that for most of his time with us because of the players available to him. So, we could see a different Moyes when he works with better players.

Would he take any of our squad with him? I think Jagielka, Baines and Fellaini would be the most likely, although they're well-stocked at centre back and Evra is their captain.

He does deserve a stab at a bigger job and I hope he can develop into the role, if he does go. It would be a bit strange to have so many Everton-United connections but if he could let us have some of their players it might not be too bad. I can imagine Neville being asked if he's interested in the Everton job but restating his desire to carry on playing as long as possible. It could be an interesting summer!

I have always thought that the man whom replaces Fergie is on a hiding to nothing.

Especially if Fergie moves "upstairs".

If you keep on winning it is expected of you and Fergie will be given much of the credit.....if you fail it will be soley your fault.

The shadow of Matt Busby hung over oith Wilf McGuinness and Frank O'Farrell culminating in relegation befire Tommy Doc revived them on the pitch.

The next manager but one at OT might be the better option.
