I have had enough of vista - which came pre-installed.

I have a legal (seriously ) copy of XP professional, never been opened/used, but it says 'For distribution with a new Dell PC only'.

My PC isn't Dell. Will this make any odds?

If not, will having XP on the router compuer be a problem when the networked computers are vista?

vista cannot identify the korean government education database.

another feather for it's cap.

Ive got Vista, not worth the money i payed for it, but i used my mates computer yesterday with XP and i hated it! Vista is great (ish)!

You can install it but all the drivers will be wrong and it 'might' check for certain hardware. So it's probably not worth the hassle.

Sod it, if you have a legit copy dig around the net and figure out how to extract the cd key for it from the Dell bundle. (yes it is possible). Then download a proper XP cd iso and install that. It's legal to download it and install it with your own key.

You may have problems getting a Dell Disc to work on a none Dell PC - not defo sure but they did used to lock them down - so did compaq !

I would normally reccommend that you wait till at least Service Pack 2 is distributed before going out and getting a new Operating System - I think Vista is still on SP 1.

But if you have it as part of a new PC Bundle you may as well try and embrace it and start getting used to it - I have Vista on this thing and have not had any real problems as yet ! - Stick with it - you'll only have to go there eventually.

Look at it this way.

XP set up networks and wireless connections without a problem.

Bought girlfriend a laptop with Vista. Wasted multiple hours and premium rate helplines later we get to point where wireless will work only when she types in gateway IP manually each time she starts computer. And, of course, ISP says its Vista, MS says its computer, Dell says go forth and multiply. Then, after a month of that, it strangely starts working "normally".

And compared to general population, I am supposed to be someone who knows about computers. I will not buy (and have not bought) that [Poor language removed] until my current work programmes no longer function on XP.

I use Windows XP for the software package I use for my work. I use a Dell Inspiron 6000. The sorriest thing I ever did was to buy a Dell laptop. It has been a pile of [Poor language removed] almost since day one. It is barely alive now and I need to replace it. My dilemma is that, my design software is not tested for Vista and everything comes with it. If I buy a new laptop, is it possible to buy a copy of XP and be able to (re)install it on it ??????????

it wouldnt be a problem, u wud just basically have a dell pc in a different tower, my router computer is on xp and my laptop is vista and works ok...however not to wise about that kind of thing so cant give any more advice than that

the routing shouldn't be a problem at all.... as long as all your computers (regardless of OS) communicate over tcp/ip (and they do), they'll chatter quite happily. well... at least until ipv6 starts getting pushed out, but you won't have to worry about that.

I got the wife a Toshiba lap top with vista and both of us prefer xp which I have on my desk top my worry is I'm getting a laptop for xmas as a suprise and as I dont know any thing about it(only found out because I was thinking of getting one last week so the wife let me know my daughters getting me one for xmas)just hope I can use my xp because im no good with this computer stuff all I want is one to use for my footy and emails.(y)

Love it I really do.

Now look, if you want to have a decent computer with decent applications and a kick ass OS, you have to go Mac.

Trust me, its the future, it really is. PC's are cheap and nasty, Vista is a disgrace and was only pushed out to try and match Leopard, which it never had a chance of doing so.

Couldn't be doing with making a separate thread for this but does anyone know what's wrong with the laptop (compaq presario) when it's plugged in but doesn't charge while on? I've already recently replaced the charger and battery one or two months ago.
