Computer games.

The level of cultishness around that game is something that will generate work for sociologists for years:

Star Citizen has been in development for six years and it still doesn't have a release date - but the money keeps flooding on in.

The space PC game, which has so far raised nearly $200m, recently held CitizenCon, a gathering of fans and developers for all things Star Citizen.

Off the back of that, the release of a new update, a flashy new trailer and the sale of some new spaceships, developer Cloud Imperium Games saw $379,254 flow into its coffers in just one day.

The following day, on the 11th October, CIG brought in around $320,000. And yesterday, 12th October, around $200,000 came in. Based on this trajectory, by the end of this week, around $1m will have been made.

This marks a giant jump in revenue for the Star Citizen norm. Each day this week prior to the 10th, the game pulled in around $21,000.

Barely played any games for ~2 years but was glad I got Spiderman. Such a sick game, Spiderman 2 for ps2 was one of my all time favourites too so it was nice to see a spidey game finally live up to that after over 10 years.

Just waiting for Red Dead 2 now. That should perpetuate my miserable existence through to Christmas.

I think generally the idea of a fallout mmo is sound but realistically it won't work.

The issue with modern console mmo is that it revolves around locked content a d I don't think this will translate well to the fallout world.

Just a crying shame they never went the new Vegas route and give the engine to another company to develop something similar to new Vegas. Hell the new fallout Miami will be much better than fallout 76.

My theory is that this is the Bethesda marketing plan from now on. Their two big titles are fallout and elder Scrolls. So whilst they work on elder Scrolls they throw out an mmo that brings steady cash into the company with minimal supervision whilst the real workpower goes to es6 instead. Sadly fallout is phoned in by the company either way so that doesn't factor in

I suppose it’s a consequence of how much ES6 / Fallout 5 are going to cost to make, and tbh I have no problem with it as long as they keep the standard of those games up. I didn’t like ESO but there are people who do and if they / us are getting something while we wait for the top games then fair enough.

I’d much rather they do that, or do what those Turkish lids have done with M&B 2 (keep developing it for years until they are happy it’s good enough) than do what most companies do, or what Roberts looks to be doing with SC.

Been looking at some of the footage of Fallout 76, I really can’t see how they are going to hold people’s attention with this long term. Which is kind of the point with MMO style games.

The world looks vast but generally empty.
Lack of NPC’s and most of the story is told through notes and terminals.

Early impressions from those who’ve played it seem luke-warm as well.

Sad they’ve taken one of the best RPG franchises and gradually morphed it into a run of the mill shooter.

Hope I’m wrong, mind.

I think ESO is run by the parent company?? It’s kind of similar to the New Vegas model where they have a different team working on it entirely. Zenimax owns Bethesda so they can use whatever content/lore they come up with for the Elder scrolls series.

I’m honestly worried about Bethesda. I hated Fallout 4 and I hope to the lord they don’t dumb down Elder Scrolls more than they already have. Skyrim was still a very good one in fairness, but it signaled a transition into making simpler games.

I wouldn't worry about elder Scrolls.

Fallout 4 although decent was nowhere near as good as it could have been. But when you look at the difference between fallout 3 and Skyrim you can see where Bethesda have their priority. Unless the completely messed it up, es6 is going to be absolutely fantastic as I believe that is where the real love goes in the company

True, though given how much ES6 will cost to do right I am sure Zenimax will be on the hook for some / most of the development costs.

the worrying thing for Bethesda fans were how much of a rip-off Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR were

Yeah. When I think of Fallout I think of New Vegas, and then I remember Obsidian was actually the group behind it. I wish Bethesda would keep giving them the keys to Fallout as we’d have some better games.
