Computer games.

Seen a trailer for a remake of Road Rash this morning. Looks awful and takes all the things that made the original good and throws them out the window.

Aw, that's a shame. Only the very first one had it done right: the mechanics & physics were perfect: the sensation of speed and the crunch of the attack felt real, you had to perfectly time your attack to take out the rider, or to take his chain...amazing feeling when you pulled it off. Road Rash 2 somehow felt more arcady and much easier, like you're just flying through a virtual tunnel with the collision-detection being a lot more forgiving.

Bit like how only the original Rollcage had the mechanics & physics right with Rollcage 2 repeating the same mistake as Road Rash 2.

Original Rollcage & Road Rash are by far the greatest, and most sheer fun, racing games ever...SNES F-Zero in 3rd place. Always felt Wipeout was overrated and the serious simulators like Gran Turismo aren't for me.

Road Rash 2 is far better than the original Road Rash IMO. And Road Rash 3 for that matter. Agree with Rollcage; underrated game that.

Anyway, you're generally right. Road Rash was and is a product of its' time - it suited the 16 bit era. It's still incredible to play today but that's because the 2D/simulated 3D have it a "crunchy" feel of struggling for speed and battling your way to the finish line. Tapping the D-pad to nudge to the left a bit is much more rewarding than full analogue controls for a game of that kind.

It doesn't work in full 3D. It's already been tried on the PS1.

The new Road Rash (it’s not even called that though is if?) shouldn’t really be compared to the old ones.

It’s a throw away ‘budget’ title. Which is probably why they didn’t keep the original title.

Yeah, "crunchy" and "battling" are fitting ways of putting it.

I still play Rollcage 1 now, on hardest-level...the 'battles' are so visceral and epic. One small mistake and you won't win unless you get lucky with weapons (of course, you must deactivate the 'catch-up' option). The Ai of the other racers is still excellent 20 years later, really unpredictable. Easily up there in my top 10 games of all time.

I've got GRIP - the new Rollcage-esque work-in-progress from some members of the old Psygnosis development team - and it's getting there...not quite the same lovely chaos yet, but they're still developing.

Rollcage 1 & 2 for the PC, very faithful ports of the PS1 versions, are available as quasi-freeware/abandon-ware as the rights issue is so convoluted no one's really sure who has them.

Psygnosis were geniuses for their era. Liverpool lads done good.

Formula 1 '97 is still the best F1 game to this day. That's not even nostalgia speaking; I play it now because it feels and plays like visceral racing and has the classic drivers, whereas the newer F1 games have no appeal to me whatsoever.

Graphics do not make a game.

Aye, they arguably made the Playstation the huge brand it is today: Wipeout was the entry drug for so many. It made gaming seem cool and edgy, which from a marketing perspective was key at the time in the Playstation's success.

Never played F1, but deffo understand why you still play it! My all-time number 1 favourite game is Final Fantasy VII, despite its pixely-characters. Turrican even is still great fun.

I've tried many of the triple-AAA massive-budget high-end-GFX games over the last few years...but all too often the gameplay bores me: many are little more than interactive movies, and even the sports games have gone backwards gameplay-wise, despite realistic graphics. Or rather, because of the realistic graphics...as the weight-of-development has gone in that direction rather than the mechanics & physics.

Ah, my weekend has arrived.

One to open and play with, and one to sit factory sealed in my display cabinet with the rest of my retro collectables. Yeah I'm 38 next month, so what?! I'm off to play Secret of Mana like it's 1993.

a mate of mine's our age too and is a serious collector...has everything from the Neo-Geo to really obscure japanese machines I've never heard of.

another mate of similar vintage is (still) a massive megadrive fan...we wanna do a Streets of Rage night at some point: hardest level, fat speakers, lots of beer.

personally i wanna bag an Atari, the model we used to have when i was a tiny boy: wooden sides, Yars Revenge, Frogger, Space Invaders and joysticks that break after too much Decathlon.

Nostalgia can be a fine thing.

I lost count of how many joysticks I broke playing Decathlon on my 2600 Jnr. !

Do you mean Road Redemption? It's been out years and is pretty good by all accounts. It even has a 4 player split screen!
Has it? Popped up on FB as being in development and coming soon. That said things like shotguns, explosions and rooftop racing have no link to the original for me.
