Would anyone be so kind to give me a brief idiots guide to Steam and Steamplay? If you download a game through Steamplay do you require a constant internet connection? The internet is gash in my flat.

How gash? Can be a little frustrating if you have an infrequent connection especially trying to download the game in the first place. I wouldn't recommend too much unless you can get a relatively decent connection. Games will play fine offline but need constant updates.
