I can only speak from my own experience but with the PS4, I had a day one release and it worked perfectly for me til the day I left it behind for my PS5. The only issues I had with the controllers was the rubber coming off the thumb sticks but they never broke in terms of actual function. Maybe I was just very lucky, maybe you were very unlucky.
Discs are archaic but the consoles still have disc drives and it’s really not that much of a pain to put in a different one.
I’ve always been a console owner and through PS1/2/3/4/5, N64/wii/Switch, Xbox/360/Series X I haven’t had a single one fail on me.
Again, almost certainly good luck on my part but I think failures are not that common.
Like you say people have different experiences. I also had two Xbox 360s break on me. One within warranty (red ring of death) and one outside of warranty. Although in fairness my PS1, PS2 and N64 were faultless.
It isn't
that much of a pain to change discs, but if you can't decide on what game to play then it's very convenient being able to quickly change between games without leaving your seat. Of course you can do this on console too, but in my experience games bought via the PS and Xbox online stores are significantly more expensive than physical copies outside of sales.
I'm not bashing console anyway. They're great for what they are, but if you have the space and are willing to spend more up front then PC gaming brings another level of variety and wonder to gaming, what with the plethora of indie, early access and PC only games. I'll probably buy a PS5 in a year or two for the likes of Gran Turismo 7.
