Couldn't find an unlocked thread anymore on computer building/upgrading so thought I'd open this... with the advent on the complete myth that is Black Friday sales it got me thinking maybe I'll treat myself to some new bits for Christmas. My PC was a custom order off CyberPower back in 2011 so, yeh, old. Only new part I've added is a graphics card last year.

I've just ordered a new Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD drive inc. mounting bracket and a new 4TB external hard drive as I've never owned one before. However, can anyone look at my spec below and recommend any cheapish improvements? I game a lot on my PC but it just seems to run slow in general now, games crash etc. I've upgraded all my software, drivers etc. and defragged so I know it's not that. I'm completely dense when it comes to PC's in reality.

CPU: i7 960 Quad 3.20Ghz
HDD: 1TB HDD / 1TB SSD (needs installing and I need to learn how to move my OS over to the faster drive)
Memory: 6GB (3x2GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti 4GB
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E Intel X58
Power: 700W
WiFI: Linksys WUSB6300 AC1200 (I do plug straight in from router now though)

Btw I'm planning on keeping both my HDD and SSD on purely because I tried to install CoD:MW last night and I had to remove some files to even get it installed so I'm at my 1TB limit. Need to work out what actually makes up that 1TB though and what I can move onto the external HD considering I only have 3 games installed... I'm guessing 10,000 tracks on iTunes doesn't help.

Looks like you need a new system given that your processor is 10 years old this month. Try the AMD Ryzen series over the Intel chips for value for money and performance. I prefer the m.2 drives so your recent Samsung SSD is a waste of money.

Would you be building your system?

Yeh I know processor seems an obvious one but I've read theyre a buggar to replace for a newbie and yeh it would be me building.

I upgraded my processor earlier this year and had to replace the motherboard to be able to do it. If you going to replace those 2 then really you may as well go the whole way and just get a new system. If your current one has lasted 10 years then it's about time to splash out again especially if you do a lot of gaming and make use of it.

Yeh I was just going to get a whole new system and build it myself but I game less these days and it might end up being overkill in the end. By the time I upgrade all these bits it is just a new system in an old tower. That's why I'm trying not to upgrade my processor/motherboard if I can help it.

That's part of the fun during system building.

How's this one? Seems good value: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

Apparently the 3600 is the better value over the 3600X but it comes down price/performance ratio.

ETA: You also need a new motherboard and RAM. The newer motherboards have m.2/nvme slots where you add your SSD card. The Ryzen 5 is a lot more power efficient than your aged i7 so you'll recoup some of your cost through your electricity bill.
