Just following on from discussions today and tonight regarding our 1st 10 games in which the defense as a whole was awful.
Some one here believe you cant blame the whole defense and you can only blame certain individuals
Whats everyones view? I believe it was a collective malfunction

Of the 10 games, the following played in defense.

Neville 7
Yobo 8
Lescott 9
Valente 1
Baines 5
Jag 7
Hibbo 3

Are these individually to blame for the bad start or to blame as a collective unit?

The majority of the team was bad. Jagielka had consistently good performances, Neville had some good performances - similar with Yobo, and Lescott was quite bad at Left Back - reportedly unhappy playing there.

The main problem was the defensive midfield, and that problem has now been solved with Neville and Arteta in the center.

Don't know if Lescott was reading his own publicity but for a while he looked nothing like last year and looked out of sorts. Neville also couldn't find a blue shirt save his life and just booted it were ever he could not keeping possession. I'm glad we have come a long way since then.(y)

Like to look at it individually. I know you don't agree, but I really think Phil Jagielka was top notch from the moment he stepped in, as where Lescott didn't have the best of starts to the season, just as Joseph Yobo. Can't blame Jagielka for a mistake made by other defenders.

Lescott was dreadful in the opening 10 games, Jagielka was the best of a poor back four at the time. I voted Lescott being the person at most fault but then again, i may be slightly unkind because he is more comfortable at centre-back, not at left back where he started the campaign.

Does it matter, that's in the past! It was poor form, players and teams go through it, all their true colours are coming through now.

There great players who had a dip in form, thats it for me

Funny that because he looked great there last year. It was only after a rumour had it he was dissappointed not playing CB surfaced that things started to unravel.

as moyes has bought the players, coaches them, decides on the formation & tactics & prepares the team for each match then ultimately the responsibility rests with him. similarly, it's to his credit that from the match at white hart lane we have looked like a team & results have improved.

I would say it was a collective thing. Though you have to say a lot of the mistakes were made by Lescott.
The season is not over 10 games though, so it is really not worth going over the past. The most important thing, is that we are now a competitive side again. I am confident when we go into ANY game, we can compete with them. That certainly has not always been the case in previous seasons.

I think Jags, Yobo and Lescott have all been [Poor language removed], and I full expect them to be sold in the summer.
