I think the reason we were so poor defensively at the start of the season is because pre-season, no work was done on the defence. We were looking for a Carsley replacement, winger and striker.

Last season, the defence was so awesome that no-one was bougbt, sold or shuffled in defence over the summer, and I think the expectation was that they would just carry on this season.

Because of the lack of attention, they started crap. Moyes shifted his attention back to them, they improve.

I voted "collectively" as no one man makes a bad defence.

If we look at a results pov then you have to say having yobo in CD is bad coz when he played there lescott was made to go to LB and he aint very good there this season and we have been s**t but when he got injured we have been on a run of top form ever since and i cant see anyway except injury that he should be played again

There were a few factors.

Lescott was awful. He's lucky to have a manager like Moyes to take his ego down a notch?/find out what he's wrong? If he was on a team like Man City he'd be lost (see: Richards).

It took awhile to adjust to life w/o Carsley and Fellani was thrust into that role without having a full summer of training camp. A role that he isn't suited for (or at least unsuited for in the Prem).

Arteta couldn't get nothing done on in the attack which put more pressure on the defense as well.

I think the big factors in the improvements was Lescott's improvement and moving Arteta to the center.
