Clapping Naismith

When Naismith was at Everton he was a favourite of mine. When he pulled on the shirt you knew you would get 100% of what he had to offer. Unfortunately he just didn't have enough to offer.
Added to that he seems to be a very nice person, not your stereotypical premiership footballer.
Having said that I couldn't bring myself to clap a goal against Everton. I have no problem giving him a rousing reception at the start of the game and a clap as he leaves the field but not for scoring against us.

Why mention the donation to help save a young boys life ? That was a completely different scenario to applauding a goalscorer from an opposition side.
As for bringing sky into the debate again totally irrelevant, I was raised in the 60's in Bootle and I felt exactly the same then as I do now.
Sportsmanship is great but my god winning trophies is so much better.

Magicjuan's mentioned the donation to Bradley's fund as part of the soup of reasons he put forward as his explanation for the applause,it is you that has chosen to highlight that particular subject when it is obvious that it is a reasonable part of his rational as it transcending all the other things and being a decent thing to do.

All those in favour of the clapping, being a decent spontaneous thing to do are not questioning the reasoning behind those that didn't, so why is the reasoning behind those that clapped having to be justified when I thought it would be obvious?

Or tribalism which is what sky et al rely on for their version of football to exist.

It is a 'sport' above all else, take that out and you have only business and supporters just have 'brand loyalty'.

An ex player of impeccable character was clapped. He was a brilliant representative of our club and our 'values' as I see it. I cannot see an issue at all. It didn't affect the outcome, we were poor and got what we deserved.
At the expense of going off on a tangent, sky aren't interested in tribalism , they prefer to promote the 'bigger' cllubs who have a large worldwide following.
I cant count the number of people under 25 who when i'm on holiday and my 12yr old is wearing his Everton shirt ask him why does he support them as 'they're crap'.
I would suggest that such sentiments have a direct correlation with the sky era.

And my point being that an act of charity in the hope that it saves a young boys life, a far more important and honourable deed, shouldn't be even considered to be of a similar ilk as applauding an opposition goal.

Nothing at all to do with Sky. I used to get that off kopites as a kid. I now say it to other kids, regardless of shirt, and tell them they're crap and Everton are the best. Nothing to do with Sky whatsoever. It's because I'm a blue. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nobody applauded the goal. They applauded the goal scorer. Bit of a difference.

I think it was a great touch, nice appreciation from the crowd. I think the vast majority of the applause was because he showed respect by not celebrating, so he got the same respect back. It's what sport is all about, that's why it's called sportsmanship.

Obviously looking at this thread people have different views, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the matter. If the lad went back to Rangers he'd probably get stabbed, that highlights the difference in the spectrum of 'football supporters'. We're the good guys!

Also, Naismith has had a tough time settling at Norwich, getting stick from his own fans etc, he's only just got his family moved down there. I'd like to think our fans have given him a lift, the same way he always does for people that have been dealt a crap hand in life

Youse lot dat clapped dat Naismith are a deesgrace...if youse addent clapped dat Naismith weed av wun 24-1. Call yeself Evertonians? rage rant titty fit etc etc etc.
