Just for the record: I dont think the US triggered the earth quake.

And I'm not anti-American.

You do, though, get hit with the House of Un-American Activities Committee if you query the American Govt/military.

Yanks Out!
Defo. What was that REM song? 'Exhuming McCarthy'. Not necessary. He's very much alive

Yeah, the Marshall Plan after WWII was all about American domination.

Ever heard of 'economic imperialism?' And they were only loans anyway.

The aid given after the Tsunami, Christmas of '04 was all about taking over the region. Same with the aid sent after the Chinese earthquake a few years back. Haiti now.

Criticism of the Marshall Plan also aims at showing that it has begun a legacy of disastrous foreign aid programs. Since the 1990s, economic scholarship has been more hostile to the idea of foreign aid. For example, Alberto Allesina and Beatrice Weder, summing up economic literature on foreign aid and corruption, find that aid is primarily used wastefully and self-servingly by government officials, and ends up increasing governmental corruption. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Plan#cite_note-97This policy of promoting corrupt government is then attributed back to the initial impetus of the Marshall Plan

Oh, and don't forget the BILLIONS we give each year in aid to foreign countries. Naturally there are strings attached I'm sure.

When other countries give aid and assistance, everyone says "Well done." When the USA gives aid, it's "well they're just doing it to maintain their status in the region or get a foothold in a certain part of the world."

Laughable really.

Are we talking about sending aid..or sending troops?

So if they send aid untied then it gets wasted by shitty native leaders.

If they send aid with ties attached they're economic imperialists.

If they don't send aid they're uncaring beasts.

Plenty of sticks to beat the Yanks/whoever happens to be the leading economic power.

Lets face it, this sort of thing does happen. China are giving a whole lot of money to lots of African countries right now in order to secure natural resources.

For me the best way for countries to get themselves out of their situation is to trade their way out, as recommended by C.K. Prahalad. Sadly there are still too many protectionist trade policies in place around the world to make free trade a reality, not least in the agricultural policies in place in America and Europe. Farming unions have a lot to answer for.
