He's spot on about night time training too mate. Apparently Martinez has theories about the ways muscles react to training at different times of day, as well as muscle memory at different times. He apparently thinks that you need to train at night to prepare for night matches. Seems to work if Tuesday is anything to go by!

There has been huge huge research done in recent years in circadian rhythm, particularly in Sports Science.
I actually met a woman last year who was doing her doctorate on the topic and regularly consulted the Springboks rugby team- its hugely relevant when it comes to doing tours involving different time-zones (flying from South Africa to Australia to Argentina etc).
But from a training perspective its hugely relevant too- different individuals operate best at different points during the day. it might seem minor but in modern sports science its the tiny margins that dictate whether you win or lose.
Arsenal for example get thrashed in every early kick-off they play.
We also seem to always play better in night games.

I think it's also important (because I'm saying it, so it must be) that new methods and a manager with a different outlook could be invigorating our players. He's not the second coming, but training differently could make fairly set-in-their-ways players enjoy heading in for training and create a better mood in house. Could be a load of old coal like, but whatever.

yeah sometimes it helps to just hear a different voice after a while

There were quotes on the internet the other week from naimsith saying how the lads get awarded points in training for winning or doing good and after a couple of months whoever is top gets a gift, to install a winning mentality
bobby implementing learning psychology, classic example of a token economy. makes me love him even more.

I wonder what gift you could give a multi millionnaire to keep them motivated? Another Ferrari? Holiday for 2 in Barbados? $10 gift voucher for M&S?

It's fairly widely established that extrinsic stuff doesn't work for motivating people. Gotta be intrinsic. Look at the Man Utd players. They're paid plenty, but they don't believe in the way the club is going, so they're not motivated.

To be fair, I think a disciplinarian like Moyes is what we needed as a club in his formative years. Some one who came in and basically said "You are all underacheiving - things will be done my way, or you're history." He definitely brought a level of professionalism to the squad that we were lacking before.

But standards have changed, and the Martinez approach is what we need now to grow and move forward.

I've never considered football to be a 9-5 job; somewhat surprised that training was is so rigid before. I know RM has lots of theories on nutrition and how to fuel your brain throughout the day.

If they were only paid when they won I think this would soon change.
