Don't laugh but I was watching a game of netball on the telly this week. NZ is actually quite good at this game. What I thought interesting was that you are not allowed to run with the ball in this game. Thus getting it from defence to the attack end is performed by making accurate passes to teammates who are always on the move, always creating space by movement into areas where that space exists (ie where defenders aren't). And then I thought of how opposite to this Everton played the past season. The players off the ball were so static, not creating space and thus not creating an outlet for the pass.
Roberto should watch a game of netball, then get the Everton squad the fittest they've ever been. Because I'd like to see 90 minutes of a team with its players constantly on the move in the search for defender-free space...and you have to be super fit to enable that.
I think for the most part of the second half of the season it was more of a 4-1-4-1 than a 4-2-3-1, games like Man Utd at home, Swansea away around that time Barkley and McCarthy were forming a bit of a I go you drop back type of partnership with Barry as the anchor. I do like this formation but I don't understand why dropping Barry is the answer people seem to jump toward as McCarthy can't do the job of the sitting midfielder, he's not a holding midfielder he's an all energy box to box midfielder. I'd set up that way next season with Barry a bit deeper and McCarthy and Barkley just ahead of him making runs from deep, then Osman, Cleverley, Pienaar will be needed for a bit of guile and creativity (if Cleverley plays as either a wide midfielder or an attacking midfielder like he did at Wigan) then a pacey winger such as Mirallas, Deulofeu or Lennon. Then with the rumoured number 10 coming in we can always revert to a 4-2-3-1 but Barry is integral to the midfield because of his solidity and the amount of ground he covers protecting the back 4 mixed in with his fantastic on the ball ability. Mix this with one game a week most weeks and I think he'll be back to the Barry we know best that we saw last season.
We need to kick it in the goal
Not sure I get where you feel McCarthy can't do the holding midfielder role from and feel he's a box to box player??
A box to box player surely needs to be able to chip in with goals and assists which McCarthy really doesn't excell at? He's certainly more a Matic than Fabregas.
It still puts a lot of pressure on the wide players. But yea a playmaker on one side and a quick player to stretch their defence on the other is more than likely the team formation he's going for. A tweaked version of his first season formation.Might a change in wide players help? I'm a fan of Mirallas, but he tends to play for himself more than for others. I think Lennon would perhaps be more creative of the two. If we could get a Pienaar type player on the other flank then that could do a lot of the creating for Lukaku.
