centralTons' Greenock Morton thread

Well hello again fellow Toffees.

Just home from Ayr (EFC David's nemesis's) and lost 1-0. We weren't even that bad, but having a player sent off for a shocking tackle was the defining moment in the game.

It's a bit ironic that I started this thread on the first day of last season when Morton were top of the league, yet we find ourselves bottom of the league below a year on.

At least I have Everton to fall back on.;)

Agree that Jim Duffy was far from an inspired managerial choice and think it's going to be a long season at Cappielow. The freefall last season was shocking. Many teams then get relegated two seasons because they experience the déjà vu effect.

I truly hope this doesn't happen to you as I have always had a place for Greenock Morton since the late 80's, Wylie, era etc, although must admit my full allegiances lay with Motherwell. I think if Morton hadn't of got relegated around then I may have had more exposure but they kind of dropped out of view for a bit!

You say the squad is very youthful now. Has the money that Douglas Rae invested previously dried up? Or is it just harder attracting more decent, experienced players now at that level? The only players I recognise are Andy Barrowman, Nicolas Caraux and Jamie McCluskey.

Here's hoping you turn it around in your next game and go from strength to strength from then on.

From what I've seen so far this season I agree it's gonnae be a long season. I think Dunfermline will win the league, but we really need to get ourselves into a play-off place as part-time football beckons if we don't get promoted at the first attempt.

Ayr weren't great on Saturday, but they we're better than us, too many players shoehorned into unfamiliar positions simply because Duffy has signed 6 centre-halfs.

Nice of you to say that you hope we can turn it around and I hope yourselves, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd. can mount a decent challenge to Celtic.

Morton 4-0 Stranraer

Vast improvement from last week, albeit against a Stranraer team who were reduced to 10 men after 20 mins. A well taken penalty and 3 cracking goals, 2 from on-loan Aberdeen striker Declan McManus, finally got our season up and running.

I heard there were more shipyard losses up at Port Glasgow this week, do you think Independence would have saved them?

Extremely disappointing to see Fergusons' Shipyard close (the last on the lower Clyde), especially as my father worked there a long time ago. I don't think the jobs would've been saved even in an independent Scotland, but that's not really a discussion for this thread.

Morton 5-2 Berwick Rangers

A hat-trick from on-loan Aberdeen striker Declan McManus in extra-time saved Morton's blushes in a game that Berwick should've won in 90 mins. However, we're through to the next round and hopefully get a decent draw.

Peterhead 1-2 Morton

Just home from Peterhead, which is at the arse end of the back of beyond. Totally worth the journey for the scenes at the end, when a glorious shot from centre-half turned striker Thomas O'Ware sent us mad Greenockians into a drink fuelled frenzy. Won the spot the team on the way up, had a great day on the ale, won 2-1 with a last minute goal and was celebrating a 2-0 victory for Everton with 7 mins to go. Then an RS fan on the bus let out a yelp and told me it was 2-2, WTF!!!

Is CT lost?

Lost 0-1 against SPFL side Partick Thistle.

lol, not lost mate, just not had a chance to post after last nights game. Not too bothered about going out of the League Cup to a side two divisions above us, as the most important thing for us this season is promotion to the Championship either as champs or through the play-offs.

No Mikey, Greenock has a PA (paisley)postcode not a G one.

Forfar 3-2 Morton

A poor game with Forfar easily the better team, the scoreline flatters us to be honest.

Best thing about the day was the Bridies :p

Heard a rumour that Gordon Strachan will get an opportunity to have a look at his preferred team for Sundays game against World Champions Germany with a closed doors game against Morton at Cappielow on Wednesday.

Bit of a miss-match there, Morton will probably beat them. ;)

Morton 0-3 Scotland

A bit disappointing that Scotland could only take 3 goals from our ramshackle defence which has usually consisted of 4 centre-halfs this season, 2 of them playing out of position obviously.

Bring on the Germans...

Morton 0-1 Alloa

Lost 1-0 today to a team from the division above us in the Petrofrac Cup quarter-final. Poor performance all round and started the game with 6 centre-halfs, 4 in defence, 1 as a holding midfielder and 1 as a striker. Manager must have a long hard look at himself as he bought all these centre-halfs and seems to be trying to fit them in wherever he can.
