"Former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley says a lack of trophies has tarnished Tim Cahill's career at Goodison Park and as a consequence he won't go down as an all-time great."

I don't think winning a trophy has much to do with a player becoming a legend at a club.

Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer never won anything at Southampton and Newcastle, but they are absolute legends at their respected clubs. Bob Latchford and Dave Hickson also never won anything in an Everton shirt.

For me, Timmy Cahill is an Everton legend.

Discuss (I didn't post this in the 'farewell Tim' threads, as I thought it was more of a debate rather than a tribute)

agree

Bit annoyed by Carsley to be honest seeing as he went from the most unpopular player to one of the most popular when played in his proper position. Can see his point but he is WRONG.

Does that mean Paul Rideout is a legend cos he scored a cup final winner and had one good season under Royle?

I heard the interview, he wasn't being disrespectful to Tim, he was being ultra respectful to the everton players who he met at goodison do's who had won something.

might not have won anything, but his passion and love for the club and fans and the goals scored for the club he will always be classed as a legend to me

That's Carsley's opinion. He's entitled to it. Most Evertonians disagree, I'm sure. Cahill IS a legend. Some of the goals he scores will remain etched in my memory forever. He's been a brilliant ambassador for Everton Football and Austrailia. His legendary status is assured. Carsley, to a lesser degree, is a legend in my eyes too.

Who defines a legend really, remember him the way you want, a hell of a lot of good times.

This really. He's an absolute hero though, no doubt about it. Legend...well, make your own mind up

i think thats a journo making a story out of nothing, super lee wouldn't say anything nastily, he holds the club in too high a regard

He's one of the most limited footballer i've ever seen. Sure, he's scored some crucial goals, but to
call him a legend, that's pushing it. Pienaar on the end will go down as one the all time greats
should he decide to re-sign and spend the rest of his career with us. And that's a fact btw.

Pienaar will go down as a snide mostly for the way he ran down his contract.

He's a hero but not a legend in my eyes. Lack of trophies being the only reason. Had everything you want in a legend, passion, determination, loyalty. Everything but trophies.

And shearer and le tissier are legends at clubs without the amount of history and trophies we do.

Spare me okay. When Pienaar left Ajax (a team that has won more Champions League titles than Everton,Arsenal,Spurs and Man United combined) for Dortmund, the fans gave him a hero's farewell. He is still highly thought of in Amsterdam and held at very esteem. That my friend, is what I call true football supporters who understand how the world works. Not bitter, twisted blokes who begrudge a player for trying to better himself.

Is that all it takes to go down as an Everton legend - passion, determination and loyalty - all qualities that John O'shea and Jay Spearing have in abundance. Really? Is that how far we have stooped as a club?
