I think we’re short a top quality striker if we want to really compete. And I would also say Pickford has a massive question mark against him. We’re ok at CB but could get better to partner Holgate.
Maybe a new CM will lead to improvements elsewhere. Certainly have my fingers crossed.
Midfield is the engine room of the team and at present we look weak and slow in that position.
I think there is little doubt that the manager has looked at the team and realised he is wasting his time until that problem is addressed.
I believe he has put other areas on the back burner until he first fixes this problem.
A properly functioning midfield could mean that Richarlison can afford to do a little less defensive work.
It may allow Iwobi to concentrate more on attacking because in his last few games he was more full back than winger... I am probably being kind here.
It might allow Digne and Coleman to have more confidence going forward without the fear of being totally caught out of position if the go over the half way line and may provide more support for the strikers who very often look totally isolated.
Finally, they could provide cover for the back four who had precious little of that last season.
A big ask indeed, but that is what a proper midfield brings to a team.
