Labone would be the historical logical choice for me. But in today's world I would actually go with Alan Ball. He captained Arsenal and England both by example and the right amount of stick for his players if they did not contribute 100% as well as the Ref.

Labone is this captain's captain. He was my idol when I was a kid. Had a football book with him on the cover, leading out the blues in the FA cup final. Then, many years later, as I was walking into the gents in the 200 club at half time in Goodison, and having seen the old skipper earlier in the club, I casually remarked to my dad how much weight Labone had put on, when who should be walking out right in front of me just as I am speaking? Yes, the man himself. He immediately answered back, "Aye lad, not getting any younger either!". I felt immediately crushed, and shamed, and did not even get a chance to apologise there and then due to the crush of people. He did not in the least act offended, but I felt I had disrespected one of the most respected ambassadors of the club (though totally unintentionally). I wanted to find him later, but never got a chance to. Damn! Finally get to meet my hero and all I could do was comment how fat he looked!!!
