Captains' Captain

For me it's between Rats and Watson.

I'll plump for Watson as he was captain though a difficult time, won something and served as caretaker manager while captain.

But obvs Kev is a great.

Was Gough ever captain?

When he joined he took the side to a whole new level.even though he was on his last legs...

Would have to be Labone. I never seen him play but the videos of him show a man of great stature with immense credibility. He even gave coppers a ticking off for manhandling Eddie Cavanagh at Wembley in '66. I know he knew Eddie, but a captain in a cup final who went to the aid of a fan never mind a team mate. That's leadership.

Imagine Jagielka in that circumstance...he'd have been standing frozen to the spot or turned away pretending he hadn't seen it.

Wow. Tough choice. I would narrow it down to three. Kevin Ratcliffe, Brian Labone (based on what my Dad says) and Mick Lyons. I would have to go for Mick Lyons. True Blue, the teenage me adored him, my brother lives in Perth and sometimes has a beer with him. He says Mick is always made up to talk all things Everton with him.

Mick Lyons wouldn't get in the side. Brian Labone is head and shoulders above any other captain since the day he took on the role......

The Rat
When he picked up that fa cup he genuinely looked like his dream had come true .
Few tough nuts in his teams , no doubt he got respect or so it seemed, from those players.

Labone is this captain's captain. He was my idol when I was a kid. Had a football book with him on the cover, leading out the blues in the FA cup final. Then, many years later, as I was walking into the gents in the 200 club at half time in Goodison, and having seen the old skipper earlier in the club, I casually remarked to my dad how much weight Labone had put on, when who should be walking out right in front of me just as I am speaking? Yes, the man himself. He immediately answered back, "Aye lad, not getting any younger either!". I felt immediately crushed, and shamed, and did not even get a chance to apologise there and then due to the crush of people. He did not in the least act offended, but I felt I had disrespected one of the most respected ambassadors of the club (though totally unintentionally). I wanted to find him later, but never got a chance to. Damn! Finally get to meet my hero and all I could do was comment how fat he looked!!!
Take it from me Brian wouldn't have been offended, he liked a bit of banter, especially with fellow Blues. I had many a chat with Brian about Everton, the one thing that struck me, he never had a go at any Everton player, just loved the club,
wasn't fussy on Liverpool, I was talking to him the day they lost 2-0 to Arsenal, he'd had a tenner on Arsenal to win by that score, I wish I had followed him. Mind you I couldn't have got more pleasure if I'd had a grand on that score, Liverpool losing was more than enough for me. Did I say that Brian Labone is the captain for me, closely followed by Peter Farrell.
