Im not saying I believe they are trying tp gain the moral high ground, im saying what the statement says makes sense.
If players take a pay cut, the owners save money and less tax is paid. Liverpool have just furloughed all their non paying staff so if their players take a 30% cut, who gains?
No the furloughed staff as they are not being paid bt the club, not the Government as the taxes have decreased. The only people who benwfit from a wage reduction is owners.
Now the players may need to take a reduction to offset losses from match day revenue or tv rights etc but the 30% reduction has nothing to do with helping the NHS make more money.
They would be better making a statement stating that they want the full pay but will donate X amount of money per month across the PL. Thats divided between money to NHS and staff of lower league clubs
The problem I have with this view is the government is paying (most) of the wages of the furloughed staff so 1. They're not really paying tax as government is paying it and 2. Money that could be spent by the government on the NHS is out the window.
So to keep the maths simple if an employee gets a gross £2000 then the Government is paying out £1600 and will get a small portion back in deductions. If the players/coaches took a pay cut that enabled clubs to pay non-playing staff that would be saving the government paying out that money and they would be getting the full tax from these employees, start multiplying that by 10/20/30 etc. per club and that will start helping the 'NHS' too.
It is the greed where the players think they are being singled out for being some of the highest paid people in the country...erm that is why you are being singled out! I'm sure company owners are going to lose money and businesses in all of this but they don't have to worry about keeping staff safe, trying to run a business from home with all the stress in the world. The players are technically furloughed as they can't do squat about their jobs bar from work out in their home gyms whilst they pocket 100% of massive wages.
They could take the pay cut and still donate money to the NHS, care homes etc. Or pressure their clubs to not make redundancies or furlough staff. That they are resisting just shows the gall of these people, Hall & Oates wrote a song about this...Out of Touch.
