Buying players because of a major tournament

Drajon Stojkovic in 1990 to Marseille after Italia 90. That didn't quite work out did it. 5.5 million in those days was insane money.

Oleg Salenko in 1994 to Valencia after USA 94. Finished top scorer with 6, scored 5 in one game against Cameroon. He was a bit crap after that world cup.

Asamoah Gyan. How much did Sunderland pay, about £10m?

To be fair his scoring record is pretty ridiculous. Something like 50 goals in 90 games for Ghana, averaging more than 1 per game at Al Ain (I know the league is pants) but didn't he get like 10-15 goals for Sunderland in his only season? Personally think he's a brilliant striker who's wasted out in the Middle East.

Mijatovic in 98 for Real Madrid comes to mind I suppose

Doesn't happen often

My question to you would be though, if a player was like that, would you feel convinced to sign him based soley on his Champs League form?

I don't see why not. The CL is generally a higher standard than league form, and it's over a long enough period of games to not be a fluke. World Cups can be different as you have a greater spread of teams in terms of quality. Once in the group stages of the CL, every team is pretty decent so to do well you have to be a good player I think.

Not sure his international record is worth shouting about, i'd get 1 in 2 against Lesotho, Cape Verde, Swaziland and Mauritius. To be fair his Sunderland record was ok, something like 10 in 35ish. The point i was making was he was signed for about £12m after the world cup for scoring a few penalties (did he score from open play?)and missing the most important one, then after only one season couldnt wait to get back to a similar standard of football that he was used to, French and Italian mid table mediocrity.
