Apparently calamine is no longer fashionable for chickenpox. It dries the skin out, causing it to crack and scab, increasing the risk of scarring.

The lovely doctor/pharmacy folk now recommend pinetarsol (smells like woodhouse smoke, and is a green colour). Bung a few capfuls in the bath and let junior splash around abit giving nice relief.
