Breakfast in America

This is a tough one. On the one hand I'm not a gun guy, never have been, never will be. On the other hand, 99% of the people I know that own guns would never, ever do something like this. The guy snapped. The right to bear arms is in the bill of rights. You just don't mess with the bill of rights, because if you can weaken one you can weaken the others (like free speech, right to assemble, etc). Picking an choosing which ones are the REALLY important ones is a slippery slope.

Having said that, it IS reasonable to require certification and registration of guns (most states do), just as we do with the right to drive/own an automobile. Without knowing this guy's background, it's possible, probably even likely, that nothing in his personal history would have predicted something like this.

The truth is, in rural America you are infinitely more likely to die in a car wreck than from a gun. It just isn't a problem except in rare cases like this.

Fact is. American citizens have had the right to bear arms for along time.. Like Zed said I know alot of people who own weapons and none of them are quack jobs like this guy.

I'm not willing to change the constitution, at all..

I always like that bit about you can shoot someone who tries to burgle your house legally.

Ace rule that.

Have you seen The Felon? Its about how some guy was being robbed while he was sleeping. He woke up and grabbed a baseball bat and chased the guy outside. The guy was running away but the other dude swung at his head and killed him. He was sentenced to jail. The rest of the movie is about some fight club inside the prison.

Oh, and IHOP, Dennys, and Friendlys are all good breakfast places.

Why isn't this thread about how it's weird the way Americans put cinnamon in all their breakfast stuff?

Hated that when I worked over there and just wanted a Weetabix.

You don't say.

Fact is, it ain't the people who you personally have met and who aren't quacks that count in this sort of thing. It's the ones who are statistically going to be out there who are quacks. And they are there.

Here's that flabbergasting statistic from Bowling for Columbine once more, in the hope that it might one day actually sink in:

Gun-related deaths, 2001:

  1. United States - 11,127
  2. Germany – 381
  3. France – 255
  4. Canada – 165
  5. United Kingdom – 68
  6. Australia – 65
  7. Japan – 39

Really, what is it going to take to convince you?

I love Michael Moore's works. So easy to dissect and refute. He really does make it easy:

Point number 6 addresses the statistics you quote above.

Next thing you know, he'll make a movie about how everything in Iraq was just peachy with kids flying kites in the streets before the evil USA showed up.

Oh, wait....

I think someone else made that movie, but it was set in Afghanistan not Iraq :P
