About 5 weeks before the cup final we beat them 6-2 at their place .
Thought we bear them 6-2 at our place and 3-1 at their place that season mate but it was a long time ago and I was only 8. Just another example of the Catts team bottling it at crucial times. Almost blew it in 66 as well.

What a team Brazil were though. One of my favourite teams ever. The team of the century. Can still name most of them to this day.
Felix
Clodoaldo
Paulo Cesar
Carlos Alberto
Gerson
Tostao
Rivalinho
Jazinho
And the greatest of them all
Pele.
Who were the other 2?

Or did Paulo Cesar play in the final. Not sure.

One of my all time favourite games.

It was shown in full many years ago in a BBC series called something like 'Great Sporting Moments' so I recorded it and still find myself watching it at least once a season when Everton have ground me down so much I need confirmation that football can be actually be a pleasure to watch, or even that it is possible to pass a ball to a player wearing the same coloured shirt.

These were the two best teams in the tournament, Brazil's magical attack versus England's solid defence and a team bolstered by the confidence of being World Champions.

It's definitely the most dramatic game...and particularly crazy that a game that good was nearly settled by the toss of a coin.

Re: Brazil/England. Watching the game for the 1st time years later, for me England lacked a 'Gerson' in midfield. A lot of intelligent midfield players, but lacking in those long, jewelled passes that were ideal for quick, effective counter-attacks in that heat. Gerson didn't play vs England either- and it shows.
You're right, Gerson missed the game but that allowed Rivelino the chance to play centre midfield instead of on the wing and he was man of the match by a mile.
For England, Bobby Moore gets all the plaudits because of how he played Pele, but Alan Ball was superb as well that day, and Tommy Wright had a fine game at right-back.

But for the cock up in the QF the teams would probably have met again in the Final. I think Brazil would have won again, but England would have given them a tougher game than Italy did.

I watched the full match a couple of years ago and was amazed to see how good England were. They were the better team over the 90 minutes. They'd have been in another final if Bonetti hadn't had a nightmare in the QFs against West Germany.
