I thought he performed at the upper end of the expectation scale with Belgium.

They were never going to win a World Cup.

If Southgate's performance as England manager is seen as credible by and large, surely this applies even more to what Martinez has done?

If there is regret, it will be from the last Euros but even then the squad was creaking.

He can't have been confident that there was anyone good enough to replace the likes of Vertonghen and Alderweireld in particular, and had to go again with them.

They have no credible striker either and on another day Lukaku would have nabbed a couple against Croatia. He is on a downward trajectory now too.
