A statement has been issued by solicitors representing the families of the victims, calling today a "remarkable achievement" but noting disappointment that "not all of those responsible are to face trial".

The statement says: "This is a remarkable achievement by the families and victims of Bloody Sunday.

"Notwithstanding the unprecedented attempted political interference with the independence of the judicial process, the families have not only succeeded in consigning the Widgery report to history, and securing the complete vindication and declaration of innocence of all of the victims of Bloody Sunday through the Saville Inquiry, they have now secured the prosecution of Soldier F for the murder and attempted murder of 6 innocent people.

"We are disappointed that not all of those responsible are to face trial.

"We will give detailed consideration to the reasons provided for decisions not to prosecute the other soldiers, with a view to making further submissions to the Prosecution Service and we shall ultimately challenge in the High Court, by way of judicial review, any prosecutorial decision that does not withstand scrutiny."

Not saying this is wrong but it seems a lot of people are getting a way with murder literally

Up yours, Karen Bradley.

A very bittersweet day for the families of the murdered but a crucial day for the country if Ireland is ever to be allowed to move on.

The work done by Peter Madden in bringing this day about deserves immense credit and I’m sure I’m not alone on here in seeing the parallels with the state cover up regarding Hillsborough.
The Widgery Report was the biggest whitewash and cover up in UK history.

I wonder where those that hate the idea of 'criminals' being granted state support (legal aid) in the event of criminal prosecutions, will fall on this; given that Soldier F's legal fees will be paid for by the Ministry of Defence.

It's a stark reminder for us all what the British state is capable of doing to it's citizens. British soldiers fired live bullets into crowds of fleeing civilians!

Not only that, but into crowds of their own fellow citizens on the streets of the United Kingdom.

I often think this fact is very much forgotten, or more accurately, conveniently ignored when people in England get defensive about the Bloody Sunday murders.

This atrocity did not take place in some far flung corner of the world but right here on the streets of our own country.

And of course, the aftermath was very similar to Hillsborough.

The establishment closes ranks to protect the state authorities responsible for the carnage.....the victims and the city they live in traduced, the reputation of the victims smeared and the compliant medua parrotting the government line.

And don’t forget there is an enquiry going on in Belfast right now into what in many ways was an even worse atrocity than Bloody Sunday, the Ballymurphy Massacre.

To protect themselves. Without trying to excuse certain individuals on the day, in hindsight the decision to send troops to the provinces was at its least reckless.

Soldiers in general are neither trained or suited to police, and especially not the parachute regiment. Like I said, that's not excusing certain individuals.

That is exactly why whoever gave the orders for that operation in Derry should also be facing legal recourse.
