Big Dunc or Tim Cahill?

Big Dunc or Tim Cahill?

Ferguson. Anyone who says otherwise is forgetting Dunc.

He was Everton.

But Cahill is definitely the better player, both in himself and in his footballing input on the field for us.

Dunc's more of an "icon", but I'd have Tim in my team every time, and can see him surpassing the big man's "icon" status before long.

I don't feel that it would be fair for me to vote, as I was 6-12 years old when Ferguson played, so I obviously did not have the understanding of the game I now have.

This is why i'm 'forgetting' Dunc....

Dunc, as you say, WAS Everton. Cahill IS Everton.

Dunc lifted us up when we were down, which was a lot. All the time, almost. Cahill's given us all great moments, but I can't understand why people would say he's more of a legend. He's the better player, but if that's legendary criteria then Arteta is the biggest of the last 10 years...

Dunc was Everton, not Mr Everton or part of Everton. He was the club, and the fans, embodied on the pitch in one of the crappiest times in our history; fight, passion and never settling for second best.

There shouldn't be a petty competition anyway. Each Evertonians has their own heroes, and that's good -- this grand club has produced a lot of them. Mine is Dunc though, and no amount of trademark headers or corner flag beatings will change that. Altough maybe if I saw Everton bring Cahill to tears, I might be forced to reconsider :P

But this is about your heart, not your head, mate. Legend in this sense isn't about footballing ability, it's about their charisma, their affection for the club and so on. Just like I said yesterday, if it was about talent then no one who supports a lower league team could have a legendary player of their own.

I understand football so much more now, watching Cahill, then when I used to watch Dunc, but it doesn't matter. I'm more into football now, but nothing has ever moved me like watching Dunc re-sign from the barcodes, with his watery eyes and beaming smile. True blue.

Tim will never be appreciated untill he retires, it was the same with Dunc - from what i remember most of our fans had an axe to grind with him in his last few years at the club.nIts only now the majority seem to be all misty eyed.

Both great servents.

Well since Cahill has been playing I've been following Everton a lot more. In Ferguson's days I was lucky to get to about 6 games a year. I've had a season ticket for the majority of Cahill's time. Also, I did not mention footballing abiility, it has nothing to do with this.

But understanding football better implies that, mate. It didn't matter how well I understood football -- I could see how much Everton meant to Dunc. And Timmy, too. They're not necessarily dependent; footballing knowledge and the idolisation of a player.

I spoke with you today about this. I know he's your hero, but just look at the Poll above. 12-3 Tim.

This is why for me Dunc is a Hero not a Legend.

If you can understand this simpler now, I am a lot more attached to Everton now than throughout my younger days when I was nothing more than a "fan".

But it's not an exact science mate. A lot of the people on here weren't even fans when Dunc played.

I see what you mean now, yes. Maybe I'm reading that wrong but it came across as a tad patronising? I don't appreciate that. Maybe I just mis-read though. I am a bit tired :P
