By stepping back from day-to-day operations Bezos appears to be following in the footsteps of Gates, though in true Bezos form it's not for charitable purposes.

Not sure how I feel about this, other than to point out that it didn't work out so well for Microsoft.

Was the only individual stock I ever shorted - and the result was a less dramatic preview of Melvin Capital’s GME short lol

That's funny. I remember everything tech getting killed that summer.

One of my dad's golfing buddies was a top exec at a dot-com, and during the boom they began calling him Daddy Warbucks. He was then rechristened Daddy No-Bucks after the crash.

Microsoft when Gates got out were not creating much or doing anything relevant. It was an easy decision for Gates. They were pretty much hosed anyway.

Amazon are a little different. Bazos isn't the only brain there. He funds the brains. He was clever enough too to put the guy in charge from the division that actually makes profit for his company. Andy Jessy and his running of AWS has been stellar.

Given Amazon are headed forward into multiple automation and future tech solutions he's the right man for the job.

A little less of a megalomaniac too

No doubt, Amazon is better managed than MSFT at the peak. They have a strong track record of being foresighted and entering growth markets.

I don't know enough about the new boss to pass judgment. AWS was a great idea for how to monetize Christmas surge capacity that has grown into a monster. I do wonder how vulnerable it is to regulatory activity.

Automation is certainly the next frontier, and most likely the next behemoth will come out of the intersection of automation and quantum computing.

He a decent guy. I know people who know him. He's pretty sharp and Bezos credits him for getting AWS to where it is. I think he was in the marketing filed originally.

As for the automation it's a hot market. I consult for a couple of companies who have grown massively in the last 5 years.

Virtualisation combined with automation especially now with the times we are in is very popular.

$197,000,000,000.......One hundred and ninety seven thousand million...it just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it. Meanwhile in the Ale House, there is a thread about debt, yet here is one man who could help clear debt from an awful lot of desperate people.....I mean really, how much money does he really need for himself......

Bezos is a rich stingy weirdo who wants to colonize space for both the needless ego boost and to avoid labor laws on earth. After crapping on earth and making $197,000,000,000 on the backs of underpaid physical laborers he now wants people to leave earth so he can proft from them in space.

Honestly don’t understand it. Kids all over the world starving and he is sitting on an obscene amount of money. How do you live with yourself?

I don't think you appreciate that it takes an inordinate amount of time to heat a 50 bedroom mansion using a log burner and $100 bills that have been carefully folded and coloured in to make Amazon branded space planes.

Also it's hard to think of anything else when you are playing Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 at 120db on repeat like any respectable megalomaniac should.

Would I have a pint with him ? No.

I don't get the criticism about his wealth. The company he founded is worth $1.6 trillion, and he owns 10% of the stock. In the past year, the stock price of the company has doubled, so his paper wealth has doubled (as has anyone who has shares in them, myself included). Heck, as much as that rise will have been driven by the tremendous value they've shown during the pandemic, there will also be an element of the QE undertaken around the world, as bouts of money printing nearly always see the stock market rise.

He would be welcome in our pub, where he could buy raffle tickets for $20Million each, minimum of 5, and maybe win a really nice bottle of wine .......
