2025/26 Beto

You know peak Walker is not near peak Coleman from a purely attacking stance?
Not sure I agree given Coleman's inability to cross a ball. Baines however was absolutely next level from an attacking perspective and only Trent has been better. And Trent can only ping it (admittedly to an absolutely ridiculous level) he can't dribble and link up like Baines did. God I loved Leighton Baines.

We play with more directness and the strikers will look better. It is not shocking at all that Beto had two of his best games of the season in a row.
Thats kind of what I said at the beginning of the year, Beto is good in a direct system and running in behind. Hes not good in our extreme possession slow buildup through Grealish where he doesnt have space to run into.

His strength is his size + speed + energy, and he needs space to really exercise that.

His movement lets him down massively.

With all the ball we had, space and time, did he even have a shot on target?

He held the ball up better, yes. Is that enough to drop Barry. I don’t think so.

Burnley were awful yesterday and our midfield never got out of second gear yet our striker did nothing of note bar a few nice touches.

Barry offers more for me. I get Beto tries hard but we should have won by a few more yesterday but Beto was never in the right place.

At some point, him and Barry are going to have to do a bit more than wait for it to be put on a plate for them. We have creative players in midfield, they're just waiting for a striker to join the party.

Whenever that point may be, I dont think it'll be at Everton. They're both not good enough, though our all round play to the front men is woeful 90% of the time let's be honest.

tbf to Beto, twice he should have been slipped in. First half where illy could have put him or Mcneil in and 2nd half where Gueye decided to wait for the next ice age to happen before slipping in illy when Beto should have been played through earlier.

The service to him was non existent.

In the last two matches with Beto starting, we have scored 15% of our seasons goals.

Beto has been good in the last 2 games...he plays with a lot more intensity than Barry, especially when he is at it. I would continue with him for the next games as our starting striker, and then if forms drop, reintroduce Barry. As others mentioned, service to him last night could have been better, but there were a few nearly moments for him, enough for him to continue as our main striker.

As a manager you either embrace him for what he is or you get a striker that can play more as a foil with the ball at his feet. He is one of the more effective strikers in a chaotic system that is direct and allows him to go 1 on 1. Call him niche, crap or whatever but if Moyes was playing this way all season he would probably be around the 12-15 goal mark for the season. Maybe even more. We had opted to play a certain way that didn't suit the personnel we had.
