2020/21 Bernard

Would be astonished if we sign anyone, there isn’t a single tenuous half-link to a player anywhere.

Sometimes it aint a bad thing when we aren't linked to someone.

In fact the Bernard signing was similar where it came out of the blue

We need someone who can play up top/left hand side imo.

One decent signing/loan right now would be a massive boost for the squad.

And dropping Pickford of course.

Shame this as I really wanted Bernard to succeed here, he does have a bit of magic in his boots but not enough to make up for his size/lack of pace in a league as physical as the Prem.
Good players are good players. James is bigger, but certainly way slower, and it doesn't matter. Bernard just wasn't good enough at any point and honestly that we aren't stuck seeing out his contract is a win in my eyes. It felt like a Niasse type deal where no one could come close to his wages so he just sat and put the checks in the bank.

Fantastic news. Terribly disappointing signing he turned out to be. Let's hope it's not a loan and he ends up on our doorstep in July with Tosun, ffs. All the best Bernie but this league just wasn't for you and your adolescent body.

Think there's a massive overreaction in here about him being an awful signing.

He did alright, but ultimately not enough to justify being one of our top earners. That's the issue, but that's on the club, not the player. That's a Brands' decision too, btw, to pay him that wage. He'll have signed off on it. A gamble that didn't work out.

Wish him well, and we need a player in.

I'll miss him when he's gone. I think Bernard's the greatest and I delight in the thought of him banking his paycheck each week and laughing like a young god.

He's a pretty bad player but we're getting him off the books at a profit since he was a free so on the whole it is far from the worst business we will ever do. But really truly not a good enough player and that's not great from a recruitment standpoint or as you mentioned from Brands.

He's not a bad player. He just isn't suited to how Ancelotti wants us to play.

He was actually very bright in Carlo's first few games, but it showed just before COVID and then after the restart that we just lacked massively in other areas and his positive attributes aren't enough to play a style that suits him.

But in the games he's started this season, he's done pretty well. However, absolutely fine to get him off the books and get his big wages cleared.

On Brands, there's still a tendency to blame Walsh for his hands being tied etc and we know that's the case with the likes of Bolasie, Pennington new deal etc etc, but yeah, he's overseen some pretty questionable deals himself, mainly in terms of the wages. Lossl, Delph etc.

But, if we get Lossl, Tosun, Bernard, Bolasie and possibly Besic, Kenny and/or Delph off the books in the next few days, and get a forward in (and we absolutely 100% need to do that), then it's probably a successful window.

But I also have a feeling that come Monday evening, we'll be looking at Richarlison and Sigurdsson as our rotation options for the front three positions.

I know what you mean, but the fella has picked up more yellow card than he has goals scored (I know he's not a goalscorer, but he's hardly provided any assists either) - and even that's in the low single digits.

I genuinely can only think of two moments where I thought "that was class!" - the time he skinned a Leicester player and put a cross over for us to score, and the goal he scored on the volley at the Gwladys Street end.

I've seldom wanted a player to succeed more than Bernard, but it just hasn't worked. He's just too small and too skinny to make any kind of impact over here.
