He wasn't though, and that point is totally disingenuous.
Nobody's saying we shouldn't have made any changes, only that we didn't need to make seven of them. It's therefore perfectly legitimate to say that some of the changes were pointless without saying that all of them were. I'd have been perfectly happy for him to make 3/4 changes - Baines, Bernard, Tosun and one other would have worked for me - but seven was too many and led to us looking disjointed and lacking in both intensity and goal threat. Not hugely surprising when you think that we swapped out three players behind the striker who have 127 PL goals between them and replaced them with three who have...1.
Yeh but hang on, you just said Bernard was a fine change? And Lookman also played well. There was nothing wrong with switching the wingers out and it proved that with the fact that those two players were our brightest by far - Bernard especially.
The surprising change for me was Gylfi.
I wanted Pickford and Gana to stay in but I wasn't shocked that they didn't play. I can understand protecting Gana, but I really don't get the goalkeeper thing. That being said, did Stek play that badly? No, he didn't, and he kept us in it at times.
But Dowell/Gylfi was a strange one. Definitely.
Anyway, I won't derail the thread. Bernard looks quality. I'm sure he'll get better once he's fully fit as well.
