He won the Florida Cup with us just last season. Newcastle were pretty much already down when Benitez rocked up there - 8 games to go with a club in turmoil and championship level squad.

He built that Chinese club up from the doldrums and was given £1.7m to try turn a poor Everton squad around with a fanbase on his back from day one.

Totally different situations - Wee Davey come into a united club whereas Benitez joined at a time the Geordies were giving away 10k season tickets due to the war with Mike Ashley.

Florida Cup isnt a major honour but its still something to be proud of - no chance Lampard would have won it.

It definitely wasn’t united, we’d just been brutally embarrassed by Middlesbrough in the cup a week before and hadn’t won a league game since January

The only success anyone can point to with that awful manager is it seemed Gray was his shout and at £1.7m I think it was that was good value for money and Townsend for a free was decent too before he inevitably got injured again.

Normally we have to pay £30+ million to get a player worth £1.7 million.
