I agree with that, and i'd extend it to include footballing intelligence as well. The best centre halves/partnerships just keep attackers at arm's length with front foot defending, whereas we're always saying people have had good games when they're making blocks and last ditch tackles. I remember going to Spurs a few years ago and Vertonghen just gave an absolute masterclass in dealing with Lukaku. He was neither faster or physically stronger but he just forced him into positions he didn't want to be, kept nicking the ball off his toes etc. We're badly lacking a defender who can do those types of things so I hope Godfrey is the answer.
Id agree, always liked John Terry but rated Rio above him. While Terry would throw his head in front of a bus, Rio would come off the pitch and hang his kit up ready for the next match.
But by god we could do with someone half as good as either of them.

In terms of PL experience I mean that he has shown he is capable of performing at that level. I've had the argument before about the fact that individual players can be good within a poor side. Defending isn't the sole responsibility of the defence - it's a team game. Being in a poor Norwich side doesn't mean Godfrey doesn't have ability - Gana Gueye and Jack Grealish played in an awful Villa side that were relegated a few seasons back.

I think the signing was made because the opportunity was there. That may not have been the case with other positions and I don't dispute the requirement for strengthening. But if you can't do a deal for a priority position you really need that doesn't mean you shouldn't do any other deals. It's not a one at a time system, multiple deals are often being worked on at once all at varying stages.

He's been available for 4 (I think) league games. The fact he isn't an automatic starter at this stage really is a non-issue.

Additionally - Saying we have the likes of Gibson or Gbamin as an emergency central defender really doesn't counter the case for signing Godfrey. If a player isn't considered good enough, fit enough or ready to play to the level required then their availability is irrelevant. See Niasse, Bolassie or that garbage full back we got from Southampton whose name I can't remember!
Again, wouldnt argue with players in a bad team not being bad, there were plenty of shouts for Aarons from Norwich, slab head and the wee rat across the park two others from a relagated side.
But in my opinion, when everyones making noise about FFP and that our hands are tied to an extent, the priority wasnt a CH for the future. Keane's 27 and we've just gave him a new 4 year contract. Mina 26 and only two years into his and plenty on here have him as a starting CH, and Masons only 24.
£25m towards a position were we really need reinforced, if that means paying £45m for a player that will make a difference rather than Brands usual £20m middle of the road stuff then thats where i think we should be spending.

....it’s the physical ability to mix it with strikers we lack. Keane will win his headers but he’s never aggressively dominating opponents. Holgate has more attitude but not the raw physicality or Rolls Royce engine needed. We continue to ship goals.

Time will tell if Godfrey is the answer but he’s certainly the ‘type’ we require.

I've always felt Holgate did have that speed across the ground Eggs. I wonder about his positioning and size a little, but always felt he was quick.

Was hoping that Ben Godfrey would start against Man Utd on Saturday with Holgate being given a go during the 2nd half (depending on how the game was going, of course). Would have been good to see how Godfrey performed for us in his more natural position.

Jarrad just coming back as well .. apart from the slight lack of pace due to his size

For a kid i think his positioning is very good and he will be in the first team by 20 starting

Really, I know they have huge hopes for him and I hope you’re right.
How tall is he?
From his cameos last season, technically he looked a class above the rest of our CB’s

I haven’t seen a great deal of Ben Godfrey, but enough to say he will be a very good centre back for Everton, hopefully with Holgate along side him, I have seen plenty of Keane and Mina and I don’t think they are good enough to take Everton to the top places in the premier league, I would back Godfrey, once he has settled in to be much better than either of Keane or Mina, although that won’t be hard to do in my opinion.

Starting to go along with the shouts to play Godfrey in as DM. We need some speed there. Hes played there quite a few times. Him, dourcore and Allen in midfield. James freedom to roam and Richyand Dcl upfront
