Personally would play him right back on Weds (likely against Harvey Barnes who is a good player), and Holgate centre midfield.

Holgate hardly ever gets done one on one. Godfrey is rapid but Holgate is fairly quick too. They’re just both great players to have in the squad. In a season or two they might be our starting centreback pair but for now they’re the best defensive full backs in the league. The form of that back 4 in general means that if we score in any game we have a huge chance of winning it because teams are struggling to even get a shot off against us.

This is why I think Digne will continue to play upfield ahead of Godfrey. Both are too good to drop which is a good problem to have.

One area where EFC is superior to LCFC is in the air. They have smallish centre-backs and playing Holgate and
Godfrey again might be a good bet. Digne plays in front of Godfrey and this lets Richarlison play inside, nearer DCL.

James, Gomes and Tom make up the rest of this cunning plan.

In the near term this is true.

As we strengthen the squad, I think you'll see them increasingly in rotation at their natural positions. They'll play the same number of games as now, but we'll have Europe and longer cup runs to manage.

I would think it’s short term when we bring in reinforcements for sure. I don’t think Digne is rapid or two footed enough to be considered a long term option there.

Still, what Digne lacks in rapid pace he more than makes for it with technical ability. The guy can stop the ball on a dime every time it is pinged out to him and that suits our long ball game atm. Doesn’t hurt to have your best players all out on the pitch at the same time.

A year ago we were concerned we could barely find two starting CBs and it was a desperate need. Now our 4th option in Godfrey feels like a luxury thats almost as good as the guys in front of him.
