If I was I was a reporter I'd be talking about how this kid has pep and moxie but since I'm not I'll just commend his ever present hustle and skill. So far he's been a solid acquisition.

I think he's more comfortable on the left. It means he can play it more like a left-sided defensive midfielder and not feel obliged to overlap and get crosses in. Playing on the right he tried to play like an orthodox right back and couldn't figure it out.

...I think it was more that he was immediately against a conventional winger for the Southampton game. Conventional winger will stand the full-back up and then steal half a yard with a drop of the shoulder. Godfrey was defending from a standing start and found it difficult.

I see absolutely no reason why switching to RB will have a negative impact, unless it relates to who plays in front of him.

...I actually think he’d be much more comfortable there. He’s not the best in possession but as a right footer, the whole pitch will open up to him rather than him having to turn inside.

I'd probably go along with this. I actually thought he had an excelelnt game in the derby at right back. Robertson and Mane were running amok against Coleman and we couldn't stem the flow. They were all over him and did the same to Godfrey. I remember one run he did early on, where he just knocked it past both and carried it 50-60 yards up the pitch and went past both in the process, and in truth that was the end of their attacking threat onthat side.

Southampton he struggled a bit, a lot of that I put down to James carrying an injury and us having 10 men. He then seemed to switch to CB and LB after that and gets better each week.

I have no worries about him at right back. All I would say, and I suppose I will keep saying it, is I'm not sure Mason Holgate has done a lot to be dropped. Balance, consistency and partnerships are the hardest thing to get across a back 4. We seem to have stumbled onto one, so I'm really reticent to break it up unless we have too. I understand resting players for cup games, but the back 4 thats been starting in the league is the default back 4 for me. They have the shirts, and it's up to others to take them off those players now.

...i just think Godfrey has to play ahead of Holgate because his blistering pace and power provides much needed cover behind the back four. I like Holgate (one terrific defensive header in the first half last night) but I think he’s last cab on the rank when it comes to a starting place.

Godfrey has another gear to Holgate, if you were evaluating both. I saw a clip of them together last night, and Godfrey just looks much bigger- and thats with all the work Holgate has done from 20-23 to build upper body strength. Godfrey is just a fantastic specimen and that just gives himthe edge over Holgate.

Long term he plays, and he plays in the middle. Holgate is still young enough to improve aspects of being a CB (and has actually looked better inside) but his ceiling won't be as high as Godfreys. In fairness to Mason, none of our current 3 Cb's ceiling are as high.

My contention, as I suppose I stated above, was if the back 4 has balance and seems to play well together, I am in no rush to break it up. If we start conceding and losing games sure, but all the while we are winning and keeping goals out it's for me you don't break it up, For me winning games mtters more to me that a philosophy of how you want to play football.

It is worth stating it's a really good problem to have.

Stick to bodies in bikinis. hahaha

I'd prefer him at right back on Wednesday than Holgate (assuming it is one of them seeing as Seamus played the full 90 yesterday). Ben has been a revelation since joining us.
I would play him in front of the defenders helping out the defense and giving Digne license to go forward...but for sure will be in the team on Wednesday....
