Beer, revisited

It may be terrible, but it's got decent flavor and comes in a nitro and so provides decent mouthfeel. Not a true English hand-pulled pint, but a wonderful contrast to highly carbonated American beer. I love American beer, but it's easier for me to get than a true bitter, so Boddington's is a good alternative.

Do you get many cask ales in bars then or is it mostly nitro?

For those in and around Liverpool this weekend it is the St Georges Hall Beer Festival. Its a top seas if you're inclined.

I've read a better explanation elsewhere, but this is probably sufficient to explain the differences:

What Makes Cask Beer Different From Keg Beer?
Normal keg beer is filtered, carbonated to usually 2.4 volumes of CO2 and pushed out of the keg with CO2. Cask beer is dispensed traditionally (and preferably in my opinion) by being pumped out of the cask using what is called a beer engine (hand pump). Since there is no CO2 pushing the beer out of the vessel, air is allowed to enter the cask as the beer is dispensed.

You can still get some lovely stuff out of kegs (and I'm sure there are a few high-volume establishments serving from casks), but it's pretty rare in my experience, so the Boddington's nitro is a reasonable substitute. I'd guess the dependence on high-CO2 keg-pumped beer is related to the American preference for high-hop beers.

I know , Mrs Twain is giving me the day to myself, so will let you know how it went and what I sampled later ( if I'm in any kind of fit state) Cheers.
Enjoy yer day man, Ship and Mitre is my first port of call any time I'm down for a game. Has the best range of beer of any bar I've been to in Liverpool and indeed most cities I've been to...except maybe Brussels.

The old licensee Dave was a legend, he used to go down into the cellar to change a barrel, with a glass for a sample. A few hours later he go would be found fast asleep in the armchair that was down there, having sampled too many !.

The Dispensary in Renshaw Street deserves a shout too. Great ale selection and Zoe the bar manageress deserves her own fan club !
