Beer, revisited

Has anyone been in The Engineer, tucked away in Arrad St behind the Casa on Hope St.

Went past it today, looks like a cracking backstreet pub.
I've been, I used to work un there before it was sold, used to be one pub, but now extended. We were made redundant over the phone, and was not allowed to collect my Everton mug ! Anyway, I've been in once, full of students when I was there, there's a nice suntrap area, the beer was very nice, but the clientele was not for my taste.

Interior looks stunning and they have a real fire too !

If it's how I remember, that's where we used to cook burgers. Not many, which is probably why it closed. :lol:The idiot owners decided to open just when the universities closed for the summer term. We were lucky to have 20 customers in the day. You sometimes wonder how these 'entrepreneurs' actually make any money.

I thought the same about The Red Lion on Slater st when it first opened, like an A.I. typical old pub but I like it now
It's an interesting observation really, what makes a pub : for me, it's the beer, but there's obviously more to this. Seems a good idea for thread. I think, obviously the ale has to be good, but there's that indefinable ambience, the people, the whole je ne sais quoi. If course, it's horses for courses depending on what you're looking for on a night out.

I remember when I went for an interview for a job in a hotel/ pub in Bury St Edmunds. It was just how you would expect a medieval building to be : black wa ttle and daub outside, and medieval wooden beans inside. I was most impressed. After the interview had finished I was was waiting for the bus to get home. I got talking to this old chap, who told me it was all fake. It was all remolded in the 19900s to appeal for American tourists who visit due to the airfields that were extant during WW2, and were looking for that authentic ''Olde English ' experience.

You'd never have guessed that the hotel wasn't medieval, rather than the nineteenth century construct it actually was. Artificially created, but if nobody knows, does it matter ?

Had this the other day, a long time since I've had anything from Wantsum so was mildly (other puns are available) excited. Have to say it was disappointing, the ginger was barely present, and the overriding taste was that of chocolate. Not a proper mild in my worthless opinion.

Another spiced ale wot I drank. OK, not really a fine of spiced beers so I'm wondering why I buy the buggers.

I quite liked this, a ruby red ale, went down a treat.

A superb bitter from a top notch brewery. Always know you're in for a good pint from Brimstage.
