I didn't want him, I was hoping for Laudrup. It was my friend, a Chelsea fan, who kept insisting that he was the right choice and has smugly held it over me since. He seems like such a decent man and it has been great watching us play at times this season.
The fact that I was disappointed to just miss out on a Champions league place says quite a lot about how far we have progressed. Martinez shares the supporters' ambitions, and his approach to big games has been a revelation. The struggle for top 4 has actually gotten tougher with the emergence of Liverpool and the investment in Spurs (which I think will pay off with the right coach). To get us to fifth in his first season is a great achievement. I think it's going to be even more difficult next season. If United invest that 200 million wisely (maybe stop buying the guy who plays behind the striker and have a look at their defence and midfield) they'll be a force again. Liverpool will get better and Spurs could be a shambles but who the hell knows?
The only gripe I have is the loan thing. It's a shaky platform to build success on, and I'd prefer solid signings, particularly a new centre half and a striker. I'm not entirely convinced by Lukaku anyway, he's just as likely to be invisible in games as he is to be effective. It's a youth thing I'm sure. He'll be a beast in the future, but a striker with a better level of consistency would be welcome.
All in all, I'm really excited about next season. It would be great to get Gibson back and I really hope Barry stays with us. Deufoleu can be a selfish git, but I can't say that I wouldn't welcome him extending his loan deal for another while.
