two main reasons why BSG outranks Sopranos, Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Lost, Walking Dead and all the rest:

1) its highlights aren't death porn. I enjoy shocking gruesome death scenes if they're done expertly, but many shows rely on them whereas with BSG they're a dramatic bonus, and never gratuitous.
dualla's was so expertly played

2) its main women characters are just as memorably-brilliant as its men: Starbuck, all the Sixes and Roslin are on par with Tigh, Baltar and Adama in the top pantheon. Women are half of humanity yet so much telly does them a disservice, they often become defined only by their men, this reduces the potential dramatic field-of-vision a viewer enjoys.

why do you like the character?

she's full of life, all shades of it, good and bad and grey. made her s4 arc very interesting indeed.

she's really well-drawn: i can imagine having a pint with her, fighting her and maybe even frakking her. actually frakking, not a fantasy frak like with Six (who's a very different quality of character).

I wouldnt want to be in the same room with her...so annoying, loud, rude and acts tough 24/7.

i find the 8's slightly annoying, tho' the actress is physically really attractive i don't think she had quite the acting chops (like Tricia Helfer) or the force of personality (like Katie Sackhof) to pull off the role at the same high-end level of quality.

but that's setting the bar high anyway, the only character i never liked (in an effective dramatic sense) was Tom Zarek. he was miscast and poorly written. just about the only misfire, tho'.

wasnt he starbuck in the original series or one of the former actors?

The best female actress was the Aussie women...is it lucy lawless or something? Had a real presence.

Didnt find the 8s attractive at all...Grace Park is just an average looking Korean to me...

haha that seems to be the only defence the Tom Zarek character has: that the actor's from the original. Stunt casting.

yes, D'anna was also well played and written...i'd be a bit intimidated by her in the fraksack to be honest.

i enjoy quite a bit of korean film...grace park deffo has it.

with still a few to go, the absolute cream at the top so far:

Mini-series
33
Kobol's Last Gleaming
Valley of Darkness
The Farm
New Caprica arc
Crossroads
first 5 eps of S4
Sometimes a great notion
No Exit

handy little highlights package for those rewatchers on a time budget that cuts out the epic human-vs-human battles (which were great and necessary, but not quite the same transcendental story-telling).

Lucy Lawless is from New Zealand.

My favorite is the rescue scene from Season 3, with the Galactica jumping into the atmosphere, launching Vipers and then jumping back out before crash landing. Skin tingled watching that for the first time.

The rest of the episode was top class as well, but that scene.......blimey!
