And t be fair, Besic got injured in pre-season and is just about back and ready to play. Barry hasn't really put a foot wrong this season, why drop him for someone who'd half fit?
He got some match time against Belgium last night so he's probably about ready for selection again. Now all he's got to do is show he's a better option than Barry or wait until he's rested/injured/suspended like anyone else who's trying to get into the side.

He's also not made the most of his opportunities when he does get the chance so far, but at least that's something he can do something about.

Honestly everyone is banging on about Barry. If anyone should be dropped ATM it should be McCarthy...he's been poor.

yes, that is my point. And to play that system you need the pair in the middle to cover the full back's runs forward. A non attacking/creative role, but we're not talking about the formation, we're talking about the effectiveness of the two DM's IN that formation.

The main change that people would want would be replacing Barry with Besic within the current formation, that wouldn't solve the problems you are talking about. That would be for a different thread.
We've been playing with a CB at left back though (before he got injured) and he was uncomfortable pushing on, which meant that on the left hand side there was little or no need for anyone to be covering the full back area from midfield. Which made Barry even more ineffectual than usual, so the formation is completely relevant to the discussion.

I disagree with your original point that having Coleman and Baines bombing forward takes away the need for creativity in the centre midfield. I also don't believe we rely solely on our full backs for creativity, that's a nonsense point. I didn't say we did, I said we shouldn't have to.
There SHOULD be creativity in the middle hence Bobby's ineffective search for a number 10, but that nothing to do with the two DM's in the side who's job it is to break up play and cover runs.
you could argue that defensively they've not been as effective as they should which would be fair game, but to have a go for something hat isn't their job in our formation shows a distinct lack of understanding.

he might have been uncomfortable doing it but he was looking to do it because that's how the formation works. Going to one DM because we're lopsided wouldn't work because there'd be nobody to cover the the middle when the DM's covering the RB.

you can't go asymmetrical back there

I feel part of the reason Mccarthy's form has dropped is cos he has to watch Barry's back. I believe its time we play 1 DM in Mccarthy and play Barkley, Mirallas and Lennon ahead of him. 2 up front with Lukaku and Kone. Best combination for me. Otherwise Besic and Mccarthy in DM, Mirallas, Lennon and Barkley ahead of them with Rom up front.

If it ain't working at the moment then it is McCarthy who is the broken link.

James seems to have gone back a bit as a player, IMO.

Barry had been OK in the early weeks of this season......McCarthy played what was possibly his worst game for Everton against Watford.

And he hasn't been much better in the succeeding games.

Not playing youth with potential is one thing you can't moan about Martinez for surely? He's shown time and again if they're good enough, do the things he wants he'll play them regardless.
Yup. But Besic is also in a position where we have a player who Martinez considers a favourite. How many different players have we actually had at midfield in a prem game, from the youth team? Barring a crisis Barry will always play ahead of Besic.

OK...good. I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Whilst Barry's lack of speed has been exposed a few times defensively I think it's actually hindered our attacking play more. He now moves the ball far more slowly than in his first season, to my eyes anyway.

Is that all due to his legs going or is it partly due to the absence of Pienaar who always showed for the ball? Probably a bit of both.

Problem is RM clearly isn't convinced that McCarthy or Besic can fill Barry's role, which was why I wondered whether we might go for a deeper playmaker in the window rather than the elusive 10. Personally I'd like to see either of them given a run of games to show what they can do and get a feel for the position - Barry is only going to go further downhill now.

Well how about Barkley or even Osman?

Do you really think Martinez would play one player over another based on the fact he likes one more and not in a professional sense? Instead of who he believes has an impact and influence over the team?
