Should we ban all breeds of dangerous dogs?

If the punishment for owning a dangerous dog was hard enough people whould stop bothering with them. Make the owners truly responsible for the actions of the dog and it will stop. If its written in law and everyone knows it, the problems will fall. Obviously that won't stop the problem completely but for the few nutters left serious jail time would sort them out.

One of the big fears I have is taking any future children to the park and having a giant dog attack them.

So you have a fear about taking the children you haven't got, to the park, where they might be bitten by a mad dog?

'kin 'ell mate, if you're worrying about that scenario, do you ever go outside?

Not so easy to be laughed at mate! I've just started going out for little runs with my 9yr old daughter. Only been doing it maybe 6 weeks and had no major scares apart from twice on the way to a park some rat has had a pit bull like dog (on a lead) that's snarled its arse off when we've gone past it. Each time we had to skirt right round the dog as it reared up and the owner had to pull back on its chain. Not nice really.

All dogs to be muzzled at all times in public. That way it's easy to enforce. Plus all owners need a licence. No muzzle license revoked criminal charges.

my thoughts too, any dog of any breed is capable of killing people.
Its all about the owner.

That's not really true though is it mate? Something like a Rottweiler has a much greater likelihood to attack and cause damage than a Labrador doesn't it?

Rottweillers get far too bad a press!

If they're brought up correctly then they are the sweetest, gentlest dogs you could wish for.

Owners play a big part but so does the breed of dog, its obviously worse(and more common) to get bitten by a Mastiff or pit bull and more likely suffer serious injury than a smaller weaker breed, but even Dangerous dogs can't injure people if they are looked after responsibly but we really don't need them in our society as there is always the danger that it could escape and kill somebody like the poor old man last week. Danerous dogs are not needed in or around public places.

I just don't see why people feel the need to own these kinds of dog which can kill people. Why can't they just make do with one of the many other breeds which don't have a reputation for it ?

This ....back in the day you needed a dog licence....now any bell whiff can own a dog.... It would be a nightmare to re-introduce but I am sure there is a way...but I expect it boils down to funding , practicallities etc.

All dogs can attack , even the chiahaus can give a nasty nip.
The owners are to blame in the main. Dogs aren't born nasty IMO.

It is undoubtedly the owner, not just the hoodies with pit bulls but those who allow the dog to take them for a walk, those dogs are not under control. I've had dogs al my life mainly from animal rescues, yes I've been bitten, both times it was my fault, I had accidentally hurt the dog and they've nipped in self defence.

My present dog was in a proper state when we took her on, she had been adopted twice but within a matter of weeks brought back because of aggression problems. When we took her on I asked many questions of the centre staff and found out that her original owners from being a pup had told them she was acting up in a family of toddlers that already had a dog and they couldn't cope. My experience told me the animal had been abused, she was actually scared of her own shadow, she'd never been petted, had no idea what affection was, on top of which she was deaf in one ear. It has taken a lot of patience, understanding and knowledge but when I take her where other dogs are she is the one always first to get her ball, she brings it back to my feet and her tail just doesn't stop wagging.

Many old folk have dogs, they quite often provide more companionship than society itself does. To ban dogs for the actions of poor owners is callous and unnecessary. Dogs should be treated like guns, if you shoot somebody it's your fault not saying it went off in my hand, if a dog attacks like the Clubmoor and St Helens incidents, destroy the animal by all means but throw away the key when locking up the owners.

They have small penesis( or penii, whatever the plural is) and owning a dangerous dog makes them feel big.
