Baines is England's first choice

Never trust anyone associated with that newspaper.

But, it's not exactly a surprise. He's got to be number 1 choice right now. But, Chelsea could end up winning all sorts, with Cole coming on strong towards the end of the season.

hmmm...I think if Oviedo wasn't injured, Leighton might even not be our best left back

Certainly his attacking play was better. Can't remember the last time Baines got a good cross in from a dangerous position. And he hasn't had one assist so far this season.

I agree. Baines has lost a yard and doesn't look anywhere near what he was going forward. We looked far more threatening down the left with Oviedo. That Southampton kid has a shot at making the lb position his own if he impresses in the next friendly. Ashley Cole has been incredibly naive not to look for a loan move to keep sharp as that will surely cost him.

You're right. Luke Shaw has a great opportunity. I think next season he will be a Chelsea player

Luke Shaw deserves to be in the squad for his performances.

Don’t like Cole as a person but fair play to him, he has always given his all in an England shirt which is far more than most can say.

Personally think when Hodgson was appointed he should have said that our goal was to do well in the 2016 Euros when the climate etc will be far more in our favour and so he was not going to put anyone in his team who is unlikely to make it to that competition. It would have given the younger players a chance to get regular playing time as a team rather than wheel out the players who have had their chance and not taken it.

Agree with you 100% but Hodgson is a dinosaur and will play a first XI loaded with dinosaurs. Brazil will not be a happy experience for England I think.

Will be very surprised if Cole isn't first choice, it's England remember, the team is and always has been picked on reputation and what club you play for, most people still think Cole is the best left back in the league. If Roy is picking Baines as first choice, why on earth take Cole, a 33 year old, at all? Surely would make better sense to take Luke Shaw? Most international sides would take one experienced player with a younger replacement but not England - we pick a 29 year old and 33 year old as his understudy and then wonder why the national team is perennially crap

If baines was on top form himself I'd have no doubt that he is no.1 for England and Cole the backup. Baines is not on top form at the mo, and surely that's down to RM setup. It's changed baines game a little, having said that it seems to have had the opposite affect on Coleman? Strange!

Back to England I don't think currently I'd name baines and Cole in a No.1 & 2 basis. Think there's games that would suit each of the better than the other.
