I just don't agree with that line of thinking in preferring Cole to Baines.

If they were Romanian, Cole played for Cluj in the Champions League and Baines played for a side not in Europe so only playing against fellow Romanian teams, with the standard there you'd understand it.

But in the Premier League? The top teams and players Baines plays against at least a dozen times a season are just as good as the ones Cole plays against in the Champions League.

Its not like Baines plays non league football.

If they were Romanian, Cole played for Cluj in the Champions League and Baines played for a side not in Europe so only playing against fellow Romanian teams, with the standard there you'd understand it.

Players [presumably] want to play for teams who win things, be it in their domestic league or at least having a good shot at winning the Champions league, as opposed to just playing in it.

Of course it still has the glamour and reputation of being the place to be, but its not that far away from the English Premier League, or La Liga really so the difference between the players Baines faces here and those he'd face in the Champions League is pretty small.

And not enough to mean Cole is therefor a better player, and his experience will give him a slight edge, the fact that Baines has been the better player in the Premier League for at least 2 years cancels that out.

But you cant say playing in champions league doesnt carry weight. Pienaar left to Spurs for it (and cash), Fellaini wants it. We lose players to it. We'd gain better calibre players and keep players if we got it.

They've won their league every year in the last seven, been in the Cl qualifiers every one of the last 6 years. And in the group stage three times out of those six.

I'm not saying its not an attrac tion for players to play in it, just that simply by playing in it doesn't make you a better player than someone who doesn't.
